The current economic development and future challenges were the focus of a survey conducted among more than 100 member companies<\/span>, which the German Sawmill and Wood Industry Association (DeSH) presented during a press conference. The results highlight the significant challenges facing the industry. The weak economy and the housing construction crisis are putting immense pressure on companies. At the same time, the introduction of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) threatens to cause disruptions in the wood markets and weaken the domestic industry. The DeSH is calling for swift political action.<\/p>\n

\"The results of our association's survey not only provide insights into the current state of the sawmill and wood industry but also underscore the calls that have been coming from the entire economy for months: Without decisive political action, there will be no quick recovery,\" emphasizes DeSH president Dr. Stephan Lang. \"The crisis in the construction sector, in particular, continues to worsen. The sawmill and wood industry, a central part of the forest and wood value chain, is under pressure, and so is a future-oriented industry for sustainable and climate-friendly construction and living. In light of this alarming development, the political measures taken so far seem like a drop in the bucket.\"<\/p>\n

Construction crisis leads to lack of orders<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of the 105 companies surveyed, about three-quarters see the construction industry as the greatest economic challenge for their business. \"The decline in construction activity that has been ongoing for months has the industry firmly in its grip. Already, 40% of companies are reporting poor business conditions\u2014and no improvement is in sight,\" Lang comments on the survey results. \"With record-high prices for raw materials and labor, companies are facing an extremely challenging market environment, especially when compared internationally.\"<\/p>\n

Economic disruptions due to EUDR<\/strong><\/p>\n

Adding to this is the growing bureaucratic burden. Particularly, the introduction of the EUDR at the end of the year poses significant economic risks. In fact, 94% of companies say they are unable to implement the regulation within the given timeframe under the current conditions. \"The survey highlights what we as an association have been communicating for months: The EUDR, in its current form, is neither feasible nor practical. Instead, it threatens to cause disruptions in wood markets and to weaken the domestic industry sustainably,\" explains DeSH managing director Julia M\u00f6bus. In addition to many unresolved questions and a lack of technical requirements, more than three-quarters of companies fear competitive disadvantages in international trade, as well as against other materials.<\/p>\n

Urgent action needed<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Wood is a resource for the future, and the industry, at the intersection of forests and timber construction, is crucial for sustainable development in both the economy and society. Instead of more bureaucratization, we need reliable framework conditions and the removal of existing obstacles to the use of wood,\" Lang says. \"Given the current economic situation and the housing construction crisis, we are calling on the government to take swift action. Waiting and merely hoping for improvement will not bring about the climate-friendly transformation,\" Lang concluded.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
