2023 was a challenging year for the Estonian wood industry, significantly reducing the profits of industrial companies<\/span>. Below are the top five companies that recorded the highest profits and losses among both primary and secondary wood processors.<\/p>\n

There were a total of 231 primary wood processors, or companies that process raw round timber, operating in Estonia in 2023, with 195 exceeding a turnover of \u20ac100,000. However, the sector has seen a sharp decline, with 21 fewer companies meeting this threshold compared to 2022.<\/p>\n

The total sales revenue for the industry in 2023 was \u20ac615.6 million, a decrease of 23.2% from the previous year\u2019s \u20ac801.8 million. The sector\u2019s collective profit in 2023 was \u20ac24.9 million, down 79.3% from \u20ac119.8 million in 2022. This steep drop has brought profitability back to 2020 levels, following several years of rapid growth.<\/p>\n

The highest profit among primary processors in 2023 was recorded by Combimill Sakala O\u00dc, with \u20ac3.19 million, though its profit had decreased by \u20ac12.6 million compared to the previous year. The company\u2019s turnover reached \u20ac30.9 million, ranking fourth in the turnover table for 2023, down \u20ac12.6 million from 2022.<\/p>\n

In its annual report, Combimill Sakala noted that it produced 113,640 cubic meters of sawn timber in 2023 (compared to 122,725 m\u00b3 in 2022). The company's operations were largely impacted by the war in Ukraine, leading to high energy prices, decreased market demand, and rising production costs. These challenges are expected to continue in 2024.<\/p>\n

The largest loss among primary processors was recorded by Toftan AS, at \u20ac2.4 million, after having made a \u20ac24 million profit in 2022. Toftan also led the sector in sales revenue, with \u20ac67.1 million, though this marked a decrease of \u20ac42.3 million compared to 2022.<\/p>\n

In its annual report, Toftan noted that the market situation deteriorated during the year, with declining demand and limited raw material availability. As a result, production costs increased due to reduced production volumes and low profit margins. Central bank interest rate hikes and uncertainty caused by the war in Ukraine remain the primary factors affecting demand.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s sales revenue was the second highest in the industry, at \u20ac213.2 million, though this represented a drop of \u20ac74.6 million from the previous year.<\/p>\n

In its annual report, Stora Enso noted that despite the decline in sales revenue, net profit increased, largely due to dividends received from subsidiaries and other business income. The cooling demand in sales markets that began in 2022 continued through 2023, resulting in a significant drop in production volumes and sales prices.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s sales revenue was \u20ac20.3 million, down \u20ac20.4 million from 2022. The company attributed its financial difficulties to a significant decline in sales in the U.S. market, one of its most important markets.<\/p>\n

Despite these challenges, Ecobirch focused on organizational improvements, workplace safety, and the adaptation of investments to meet new demands.
