The global wood market is in deep trouble as wood prices continue to decline, with analysts predicting more significant drops. Wood prices plummet under supply pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lumber prices have been hit hard in September 2024, with futures on the U.S. market falling to around $490 per thousand board feet on September 11. This marks a 7% decline compared to mid-August and a 23% drop from the last peak in April.<\/p>\n

The primary cause of this pressure is a global oversupply of sawn timber. Both in the U.S. and internationally, demand has failed to match supply, particularly in the context of ongoing economic challenges. The construction industry, a major consumer of wood, has been severely affected by high interest rates and economic uncertainty, further suppressing demand.<\/p>\n

Impact on North American sawmills<\/strong><\/p>\n

Canada, the largest producer of lumber globally, has been severely impacted by the downturn, with multiple sawmills closing or reducing output. Additionally, the U.S. has raised import tariffs on Canadian lumber, worsening the situation for Canadian producers.<\/p>\n

Interfor, one of North America\u2019s major lumber companies, announced plans to cut production by at least 15% for the remainder of 2024. This is in addition to cuts earlier in the year, driven by low demand and declining prices. Meanwhile, Canfor Corp., another significant player, is closing two sawmills in northern British Columbia, citing the increased U.S. tariffs, weak market conditions, and ongoing financial losses.<\/p>\n

In August, the U.S. nearly doubled tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber, raising them from 8.05% to 14.54%. These tariffs have further strained the North American lumber trade, with Canadian producers bearing the brunt of the cost increases.<\/p>\n

Construction downturn deepens crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n

The wood market\u2019s troubles are tied closely to the global construction slowdown. In the U.S., home sales dropped by 5.5% in July 2024, erasing the gains made in June and marking the sharpest decline since April. This has been accompanied by a 3.3% drop in building permits and a 6.8% fall in housing starts, the lowest level since 2020.<\/p>\n

High interest rates have been a key factor, making borrowing more expensive for both homebuyers and builders. The National Association of Home Builders has raised concerns about the financial challenges buyers are facing, which are in turn affecting demand for new construction and lumber.<\/p>\n

Europe and China are also experiencing similar crises in their construction sectors, adding to the downward pressure on wood prices globally.<\/p>\n

Grim forecast for lumber prices<\/strong><\/p>\n

Looking ahead, analysts are not optimistic. According to Trading Economics, lumber prices are expected to hit $482 per thousand board feet by the end of the quarter. Over the next year, prices could fall further, reaching around $450 per thousand board feet by this time in 2025.<\/p>\n

One of the major reasons for this is the oversupply of lumber in the southern U.S., where stockpiles, particularly in Arkansas, have doubled. With no significant uptick in demand expected, these excess supplies will likely keep prices low for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

Sawmill closures and job losses<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ongoing crisis has had a devastating impact on sawmills, particularly in North America. As demand for lumber declines and prices fall, many sawmills are being forced to shut down or cut production significantly. Interfor\u2019s decision to reduce output by 15% for the rest of the year is a reflection of the broader struggles faced by the industry.<\/p>\n

For Canadian producers like Canfor Corp., the increased U.S. tariffs have exacerbated financial challenges, pushing companies to close facilities and lay off workers.
