Southern Swedish timber prices now sit just below the Central European leaders, such as Germany and Austria.

Despite this upward trend, the timber industry is not thriving. The correlation between timber and lumber prices has weakened, and the market's logic has become unclear. Not since the 1990s has the cost of raw materials for sawmills, relative to lumber prices, been so high. If this trend continues, closures are expected, especially among smaller companies and unprofitable units with significant investment needs. Early signs are already emerging, including production stoppages, the discontinuation of evening shifts, and longer maintenance periods.

Record-high prices do not increase timber supply

In central Sweden, broad price increases have driven the market, while in southern and northern Sweden, the market is influenced by rising commissions and surcharges, which are not reflected in official price statistics. Further price increases, like the one implemented by Södra on August 21, are expected, particularly in northern Sweden, where the gap between the official timber price list and the bidding market is significant. Price lists, once reliable indicators of value, are now seen as tools to regulate the minimum price level.

Despite continuous price hikes, the supply of final felling timber remains low. Forest owners are focusing more on thinning operations, and several industry players report that thinning stock has been secured for up to a year. As the stockpile of thinning wood grows, the demand for timber seems to be intensifying. Sawing companies are strengthening their procurement teams to reduce reliance on external suppliers. Only when signs of a price reduction emerge might the actual supply begin to increase.

Low timber stocks in the north indicate continued price pressure

By the end of Q2, stock levels in northern Sweden were unusually low for this time of year. Pulpwood stocks have halved since Q2 2020, marking their lowest level in a decade, which is notable given the significant increase in industrial capacity during this period. Timber stocks are at their lowest levels since quarterly records began. Industry reports about well-stocked sawmills in the north conflict with these stock figures, supporting the view that a more pronounced shortage will soon become apparent in this region as well.

One key reason for falling stock levels may be the redirection of combination machines from final felling to thinning, which has reduced production.

Heat plants searching for cheaper alternatives

Signals from across the country suggest that the peak of the firewood frenzy has passed, indicating that prices may have peaked for now. Heat plants are seeking cheaper alternatives, with many increasing their use of recycled wood chips at the expense of more expensive forest chips. Stockpiles have been built up over time, leading to local surpluses. Despite this, there is still a risk of another shortage this winter. Additionally, there are no significant bark beetle infestations that would contribute to an increased supply of firewood.

Historically, Swedish timber prices have been below the European average, but with significant price increases over the past year, Sweden has rapidly climbed in the rankings.
