K\u00e4hrs Group reported a challenging second quarter of 2024, with an 11% organic decline in turnover due to persistent weak demand, particularly in the Nordic and North American markets. <\/span>The ongoing slump in new construction, coupled with global economic concerns, contributed significantly to the drop in sales. Despite the unfavorable market conditions, K\u00e4hrs managed to cushion the impact through strategic production adaptations and rigorous cost control measures. However, the company\u2019s overall performance was heavily impacted by a SEK 70 million write-down of its Russian assets.<\/p>\n

In the second quarter, K\u00e4hrs\u2019 net sales amounted to SEK 671 million, down from SEK 787 million in the same period the previous year, representing a 15% decrease. Organic sales, adjusted for currency fluctuations, declined by 11%. Operating EBITA fell to SEK 34 million from SEK 77 million, reducing the EBITA margin to 5.1%, compared to 9.8% in 2023. The group\u2019s operating profit took a more substantial hit, with a reported loss of SEK 40 million, down from a profit of SEK 38 million last year, driven largely by the non-recurring write-down of Russian assets.<\/p>\n

The profitability challenges in 2024 were exacerbated by high interest rates and global instability, which have been particularly detrimental to the residential construction sector in both Europe and the U.S. K\u00e4hrs\u2019 President and CEO, Johan Magnusson, noted that while new construction remains weak, there are early signs of recovery in the European renovation market. Order intake in some parts of Europe has increased, particularly in markets more focused on renovation than new builds. However, the U.S. remains cautious, anticipating potential interest rate cuts later in the year.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Magnusson expressed cautious optimism for a gradual recovery in demand during the second half of 2024, with stronger growth anticipated in 2025. However, activity levels in new construction are expected to remain low, particularly in key European markets such as Sweden, Finland, and the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland). On a brighter note, the commercial segment offers growth opportunities for K\u00e4hrs, especially in healthcare, education, and defense, with increased activity levels expected to materialize towards the end of 2024 and beyond.<\/p>\n

In response to these market conditions, K\u00e4hrs has continued its strategic efforts to strengthen its market presence across Europe and the U.S. This has included targeting new customers, launching innovative products, and enhancing the customer experience. Internally, K\u00e4hrs has focused on improving cost and capital efficiency through streamlining operations and reducing capital tied up in inventory.
