The total imports amounted to 13.96 million cubic meters, valued at US$3.588 billion, reflecting a 2% decline in both volume and value compared to the same period in 2023. This decrease is attributed to several factors, including a downturn in the construction industry, which has weakened the overall demand for imported timber, and a seasonal slowdown caused by the rainy season in southern China. Despite the decline in volume, the average CIF price for lumber imports saw a slight increase of 0.5%, reaching US$257 per cubic meter.

Softwood lumber imports were hit the hardest, falling by 6% to 8.87 million cubic meters. Softwood lumber accounted for 64% of China’s total lumber imports, down by 2 percentage points compared to the same period in 2023. The average price for softwood lumber imports rose 0.8% to US$205 per cubic meter. Hardwood lumber imports, on the other hand, increased by 5%, totaling 5.09 million cubic meters, but the CIF price for hardwood lumber dropped by 3%, averaging US$348 per cubic meter.

Tropical hardwood lumber imports performed strongly in the first half of 2024. China imported 3.69 million cubic meters of tropical hardwood lumber, valued at US$1.077 billion. This represented a 16% increase in volume and an 18% rise in value. The CIF price for tropical hardwood lumber increased by 2% to US$292 per cubic meter, reflecting continued demand for tropical hardwoods in China despite the challenges facing the broader market.

Average Lumber CIF Prices (First Half 2024)

US$/cu.m

YoY % Change

Total Lumber Imports

257

+0.5%

Softwood Lumber

205

+0.8%

Hardwood Lumber

348

-3%

Of which Tropical

292

+2%

Source: China Customs

The decline in total lumber imports is partly explained by a reduction in imports from major supplier countries.
