Reduced amounts of damaged wood by bark beetles were reported in Thuringia and Bavaria in the summer. Nevertheless, foresters remain vigilant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Several million cubic metres of spruce wood are still felled in Germany every year because of the bark beetle . The bark beetle continues to spread rapidly in some regions, while the overall numbers are declining in many places. The rainy summer has been a relief for spruce trees and foresters, but we cannot yet speak of relief.<\/p>\n

Bark beetle numbers declining in summer 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n

As Th\u00fcringenForst reports, the amount of damaged wood caused by the spruce bark beetle is declining this summer. In July 2024, foresters felled almost 500,000 cubic metres of damaged wood, compared to almost 1.2 million cubic metres a year earlier. Across all types of forest ownership, 2.2 cubic metres of spruce were felled in Thuringia by July 2024, compared to over 3 million cubic metres in the same period last year. This shows a positive trend.<\/p>\n

\"The development gives foresters and forest owners cautious hope,\" said Volker Gebhardt, Th\u00fcringenForst board member. The Bavarian State Forests (BaySF) also report that the bark beetle situation will ease in 2024. By the end of August, Bavarian foresters had recorded a wood waste of 500,000 cubic meters - in the corresponding period last year, there were over 1 million cubic meters.<\/p>\n

The spruce remains an important tree species in Thuringia\u2019s forests<\/p>\n

The rainy weather that lasted for months was good for the forest, according to both state forestry companies. The spruce was able to recover and the rainy summer also damaged the bark beetle in many places. But it was not just the weather, bark beetle monitoring and remediation measures by foresters and forest owners that led to the containment of the bark beetle in the forests. In Bavaria, a specialised, Bavaria-wide flexible team of foresters and forestry masters has been deployed for this purpose since this year. They have supported foresters when necessary, particularly in coordinating forestry companies.<\/p>\n

Foresters still have a lot to do locally<\/strong><\/p>\n

The situation remains tense locally, according to Th\u00fcringenForst. In some forestry offices, an increased amount of damaged wood has been recorded - contrary to the nationwide trend. \"The number of infestations in the pure spruce areas is increasing or stagnating at a high level, such as in the Oberhof and Finsterbergen forestry offices,\" the state forestry company announced in mid-August. \"However, we will only be able to speak of a definite turnaround in October, when all the figures on the amount of damaged wood are on the table,\" said Gebhardt.<\/p>\n

In Bavaria, a significantly lower total amount of wood damaged by bark beetles is expected at the end of the year than in the previous year. In order to minimize the infestation pressure for the coming year as much as possible, a thorough gleaning is needed in the autumn and winter months, according to the BaySF.
