The BC Council of Forest Industries (COFI) has issued a strong call for government intervention following Canfor\u2019s announcement of additional mill closures in British Columbia.<\/span><\/p>\n

COFI president and CEO Linda Coady emphasized the severe impact these closures have on workers, families, and communities, highlighting the urgent challenges facing the province\u2019s forest sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanfor\u2019s closures underscore the urgent challenges facing British Columbia\u2019s forest sector and the need for immediate government action to address the root causes threatening the future of forestry in B.C.,\u201d Coady said<\/p>\n

Coady pointed to several factors exacerbating the situation, including increased U.S. tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber, weak market conditions, high operating costs, and a complex regulatory environment. She stressed the need for the provincial and federal governments to address these issues, particularly through a resolution to the Canada-U.S. softwood lumber trade dispute and efforts to stabilize the economic fibre supply.<\/p>\n

In a statement, COFI said it is also advocating for new agreements with First Nations and innovative forest management practices to support the industry\u2019s resilience and sustainability in the face of ongoing global market challenges.<\/p>\n

Canfor closes sawmills in British Columbia<\/strong><\/p>\n

Canfor will close two more sawmills in British Columbia and choke back output at pine mills in South Carolina and Georgia due to languishing prices for two-by-fours and rising U.S. tariffs on Canadian lumber exports.<\/p>\n

It is the latest big curtailment by a major lumber producer amid weak wood demand and prices that have languished below break-even prices for many mills, especially in British Columbia. As they have following similar announcements, lumber futures rose in response.<\/p>\n

Canfor said it would close its Plateau and Fort St. John mills in the northern part of the Canadian province. In May, it announced another mill closure there and said it would suspend planned reinvestment elsewhere.<\/p>\n

\"In recent years, increasing regulatory complexity, high operating costs and the inability to reliably access economically viable timber to support our manufacturing facilities has resulted in in hundreds of millions of dollars of losses in our B.C. operations,\" Chief Executive Don Kayne said.<\/p>\n

Canfor, one of the world's largest lumber producers, has been hard hit in the softwood trade dispute that has raged for decades between the U.S. and Canada, where government ownership of timberlands is viewed stateside as an unfair advantage.<\/p>\n

Last month, the U.S. lifted duties on most Canadian softwood lumber exports to 14.54%, from 8.05%. Canfor's rate, to be applied retroactively to 2022 exports, is 16.58%.<\/p>\n

Like other Canadian sawyers, Canfor has shifted production to the U.S. South, where sawmills can be fed cheaply with the region's abundant pine trees. Lately, however, depressed Southern yellow pine prices have prompted cutbacks among the region's mills.<\/p>\n

Canfor said it would cut shifts and operating hours at Southern mills to reduce output by about 215 million board feet on an annualized basis.<\/p>\n

Including Canfor's cuts, about 4% of North American lumber production has been curtailed this year, according to BMO Capital Markets analyst Ketan Mamtora. He said he expects further reductions this year as the building season winds down.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
