Wood prices in 2024 are experiencing significant pressure, driven by the broader economic crisis and a sluggish construction industry in Germany. <\/span>The ongoing challenges in these sectors have made it increasingly difficult for forest owners to secure long-term contracts with sawmills, with most agreements now confined to short-term deals. This shift is a direct response to the uncertain market conditions, where both supply and demand dynamics are in flux.<\/p>\n

As August came to a close, demand from the sawmill industry remained tepid. Sales opportunities for sawn timber, especially construction timber, were limited, reflecting the weak overall economic environment. This downturn is not just a temporary blip but part of a broader trend that has been developing throughout the year. Forest owners' associations have highlighted the difficulties in contract negotiations, noting that the unpredictability of the market has forced many to accept shorter contract durations, often at less favorable terms.<\/p>\n

Despite these challenges, the prices for spruce wood have managed to stay relatively stable, though there have been slight reductions compared to the second quarter. Specifically, the price level for spruce fixed lengths in the B\/C grade, strength class 2b+, is currently hovering between \u20ac80 and \u20ac85 per cubic meter. However, the flow of fresh spruce wood into the market remains minimal, which has somewhat supported these price levels. Still, quantities of wood that fall outside of contractual agreements often fetch lower prices, indicating a market that is less forgiving for those without secured deals.<\/p>\n

Export markets have provided a small cushion for domestic prices, with relatively robust international sales helping to stabilize the situation. However, this support is limited and has not been enough to counterbalance the domestic market's weaknesses fully.<\/p>\n

The situation is even more challenging for energy wood, which includes firewood and wood chips. Demand in this segment has weakened considerably, leading to a sharp decline in prices. According to the latest data, prices for energy wood dropped by 6% in June alone and are down about 15% compared to the previous year. The ability to market additional quantities outside of long-term contracts has become nearly impossible, leaving many producers struggling to find buyers.<\/p>\n

Softwood industrial wood has not escaped this downward trend either. Prices have fallen by 2% compared to the previous month and are down 19% from last year, reflecting the broader challenges faced by the industry. Meanwhile, hardwoods, particularly beech and oak, have also seen significant price drops. Producer prices for beech wood in June were 14% lower than the previous year and nearly 4% lower than in May. Oak wood prices similarly declined by almost 11% year-on-year and by 1% compared to the previous month.<\/p>\n

These price declines come after a relatively stable period in 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, where price changes were minimal. The current trend suggests a market increasingly under strain, with forest owners and sawmills alike grappling with a complex and challenging economic landscape. The combination of high production costs, reduced demand, and fierce international competition is creating a tough environment for all stakeholders in the forestry and timber industries. As the year progresses, the industry will need to adapt to these conditions, possibly seeking new markets or adjusting production strategies to survive the ongoing crisis.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
