Raw material prices in agriculture and forestry are fluctuating in unprecedented ways. Swedish sawmills are lamenting unsustainable timber prices, but are timber prices truly high, and are they temporary? <\/span><\/p>\n

There are strong indicators that we are facing a new reality. With reduced supply from Canada and a significant decrease in timber flow from Russia to the West, a substantial supply gap has emerged that even a poor construction market cannot compensate for. Statistics from the Swedish Forest Agency reveal historically low stocks of roundwood at and en route to the forest industry.<\/p>\n

The taiga, the boreal forest, spans a large part of the Northern Hemisphere. A significant portion is found in Alaska and Canada, but the largest area of the taiga is in Russia. Russia had barely begun to tap into its forestry potential, but instead of facing a supply threat, we now see a supply gap. Without peace between Russia and Ukraine, there will be no increase in timber flow from Russia to the EU.<\/p>\n

It can be questioned whether timber prices in Sweden are genuinely high. Perhaps what we are witnessing is the culmination of decades of stagnant prices finally impacting Sweden as well.<\/p>\n

Harvesting rates in Sweden have decreased, EU policies are unfavorable to efficient forestry, and the Swedish government seems to have minimal control over its own parties' respect for ownership and usage rights. The national timber supply does not appear to be increasing significantly.<\/p>\n

Severe price and supply fluctuations are challenging to manage. There are winners, and there are those who are significantly affected. For Swedish forest owners, it is a new reality with better opportunities to negotiate with timber buyers and improved economics in forest management practices.<\/p>\n

This new reality may represent a historic opportunity for Sweden\u2019s forestry sector. With excellent natural conditions for forestry, the already substantial export value of forest products could increase even further. If this increased value reaches the forest owners, it could revitalize Swedish forest regions.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
