In the first six months of this year, sales of project and stock beams in Sweden decreased by over 16 percent compared to the same period last year<\/span>, according to statistics from the Swedish Wood industry organization, Svenskt Tr\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Sales of glulam (glued laminated timber) declined during the first half of 2024, but there seems to be a belief in the industry that a turnaround for the construction sector is possible.<\/p>\n

Sales of project beams, typically aimed at larger construction projects and contractors, decreased by 12.8 percent in the second quarter. Sales of stock beams, which are primarily sold through building supply stores, fell by three percent. This results in a total reduction in glulam deliveries during the quarter by 9.6 percent compared to the same period in 2023.<\/p>\n

Svenskt Tr\u00e4 describes this in a press release as a significant slowdown in the market.<\/p>\n

\"Despite the current challenges, there are bright spots. Even though residential construction has stalled, industry players see growing demand within these specific segments,\" says Johan Fr\u00f6bel, Head of Technology and Trade at Svenskt Tr\u00e4.<\/p>\n

Uncertain economy behind the decline<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"The decreased demand for glulam is directly linked to the general economic uncertainty, with fewer construction starts and weaker private consumption due to high interest rates and inflation,\" says Daniel Edman, Sales Manager for Building Trade & Industry at Setra Tr\u00e4varor.<\/p>\n

However, the Swedish wood industry company Moelven remains relatively optimistic about the future of the construction sector.<\/p>\n

\"In the wake of expected interest rate cuts and a market that is slowly beginning to open up, we see greater demand, especially for larger projects, during the fall. The building supply trade and industrial customers are on a cautiously increasing trend, where we hope and believe that it will pick up pace at the beginning of 2025,\" says Carl-Magnus Nordkvist, Sales Manager at Moelven T\u00f6reboda.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
