<\/span>On August 19, 2024, two major wood industry associations, The Austrian Timber Industry\u00a0Association and Italy's The National Association of Wood Industries, Filiera Legno, united in a formal protest against the European Union's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The EUDR, which came into force on June 29, 2023, mandates that products made from raw materials like wood, coffee, and cocoa, imported into or exported from the EU, must be proven free of links to deforestation. While the regulation aims to protect forests globally, the associations argue that it imposes excessive bureaucratic burdens and is detached from the practical realities of their industry.<\/p>\n

The associations criticize the EUDR for its unrealistic implementation timeline and the disproportionate administrative workload it demands from businesses. They emphasize that the regulation's current requirements are unmanageable, particularly given the lack of a functional, automated EU information system for tracking supply chains, as shown in a pilot phase earlier this year. Additionally, they warn that these regulations could harm the international competitiveness of companies within the wood industry.<\/p>\n

Given the longstanding and significant economic ties between Austria and Italy, particularly in the forest and wood sectors, the associations stress that the EUDR could disrupt these vital trade relations, which were valued at 25 billion euros in 2023. They call for the EUDR to be fundamentally revised after the European Parliament elections in June 2024 to better align with industry practices and to extend the implementation deadlines.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, they urge the EU to leverage its authority over international trade agreements to combat global deforestation more effectively, rather than imposing onerous regulations on private businesses.
