Recent developments in the North American lumber industry have seen significant curtailments in production, with companies facing with unfavorable market conditions, supply chain challenges, and economic viability concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conifex curtails lumber production at its Mackenzie sawmill<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Canadian Conifex Timber Inc. announced a reduction in its sawmill operations at its Mackenzie, British Columbia site to a single shift starting August 26th. This decision is attributed to expected transportation challenges that will affect all Canadian lumber producers, compounded by existing market issues such as reduced demand, low lumber prices, and punitive export duties. The company also plans to temporarily curtail operations at its power plant, with an anticipated resumption by September 30th, provided that transportation challenges are resolved in the near term.<\/p>\n

Conifex's President and COO, Andrew McClellan, emphasized the necessity of these reductions due to the inability to ship production efficiently, stating, \"Unfortunately, a reduced operating schedule at the sawmill is necessary for the foreseeable future... We are working on a priority basis to position Mackenzie for long-term sustainable production and will be seeking to mitigate the impacts on our employees as much as possible.\" The power plant curtailment is expected to reduce production capacity by approximately 24.6 GWh. Additionally, Conifex reported reductions in the allowable annual cut for its Forest Licenses, which will further constrain its lumber supply.<\/p>\n

Boise Cascade ceases lumber production in Chapmann<\/strong><\/p>\n

Similarly, Boise Cascade Company (BCC) announced its decision to indefinitely curtail lumber production at its Chapman, Alabama site due to insufficient investments and declining profitability. This curtailment, which will affect approximately 80 employees, is set to take effect on January 28, 2024. The company has already notified the affected workers and is working to provide job opportunities within the company and assist with available resources. Despite the shutdown of the lumber production facility, BCC's plywood operations at the Chapman site will continue as usual.<\/p>\n

BCC is committed to collaborating with its customers to manage the transition and is focusing on expanding its engineered wood products business, ensuring support for its other manufacturing locations during this period of adjustment.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
