The study indicates that while short-term impacts will likely drive timber prices up by up to 3%, the market is expected to stabilize over the next few decades.

Published in Forest Policy and Economics, the research utilizes the Global Forest Products Market (GFPM) model to project the consequences of the ongoing conflict. The study compares two scenarios: one where the invasion never occurred and another that accounts for current sanctions and trade disruptions caused by the conflict.

In the short term, the research forecasts a noticeable increase in timber prices, particularly for industrial roundwood and finished wood products. “The conflict and sanctions on Russian timber exports are putting substantial pressure on global supply chains, which is likely to result in price hikes of up to 3% within the next decade,” explains Rajan Parajuli, Associate Professor of Forest Economics and Policy at North Carolina State University.

This disruption has already begun reshaping global trade flows. Countries previously reliant on Russian and Ukrainian timber are seeking alternative sources, leading to significant economic implications in regions where timber is a major industry component.

Looking ahead, the study projects that Russia will likely regain a substantial share of the global timber market by 2050, assuming the conflict concludes by 2025. Parajuli notes, “Our model predicts that while the short-term effects are severe, the timber markets will largely recover and stabilize within 10-30 years as Russia’s industrial timber sector rebounds.”

However, not all segments of the timber industry are expected to recover fully. The study highlights that certain markets, such as wood-based panels, paper, and paperboard, may face prolonged challenges. “If production in these areas is disrupted for an extended period, other countries will step in to fill the gap,” Parajuli adds.

The increased production in alternative timber-exporting countries raises concerns about potential environmental impacts. The study warns that accelerated logging to meet the demand could lead to weakened environmental regulations and increased deforestation, particularly in developing regions already grappling with illegal logging.

The research underscores the need for careful management of global forest resources to mitigate these risks. As the timber market adjusts to the new realities brought on by the conflict, policymakers and industry leaders will need to balance economic opportunities with the imperative to protect the environment.

Overall, while the immediate impact of the conflict is profound, the global timber industry is expected to undergo a period of adjustment before returning to a more stable state.

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine extends into its third year, new research suggests that the global timber industry will experience significant disruptions.
