The price of logs has risen so much that Finnish sawmills are in distress.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, softwood lumber production volumes are in significant decline. The largest cost factor by far is the price of logs, according to the head of the Sawmill Industry Association Tino Aalto<\/p>\n

\"The price of wood has increased significantly more than the price of the final product, softwood lumber. The ratio between log and softwood lumber prices is now higher than it has been in over 15 years, making the economic situation very difficult,\" Mr. Aalto says.<\/p>\n

In 2021, nearly 12 million cubic meters of sawn timber were produced. Now it appears that two million cubic meters have vanished from that number.<\/p>\n

You have to look back more than ten years to find a situation this bad.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of underlying reasons beyond the rise in log prices: wood imports from Russia have dried up, and wood construction is decreasing.<\/p>\n

Almost all of the softwood lumber ends up in construction, and new houses are not being built at the same pace as before.<\/p>\n

According to the industry advocacy association, more wood is also being used for energy production and in the pulp industry.<\/p>\n

\"In Finland, in addition to ensuring the availability of wood, care should be taken to prevent logistics costs from getting out of control, so that exports can thrive globally and euros flow into the national economy,\" says Aalto.<\/p>\n

About three-quarters of the production is exported, but the economic outlook is bleak: \"There are no significant positive signals coming from anywhere in the world.\"<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
