Interfor said it would reduce output by at least 15% for the rest of 2024, increasing curtailments it made earlier this year amid\u00a0tumbling demand and prices for two-by-fours.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Interfor, which owns sawmills across Canada,\u00a0the U.S. South\u00a0and in the Pacific Northwest, said it would reduce output by as much as 350 million board through December. The announcement gave a jolt to lumber prices, which added $23 per thousand board feet Friday to end at the highest price since May and nearly 20% above the July low.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\"Lumber prices continue to reflect an imbalance of lumber supply and demand, with demand continuing to be impacted by the elevated interest-rate environment and ongoing\u00a0economic uncertainty,\" Interfor said late Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The company, which has headquarters in Burnaby, B.C., reported higher sales for the second quarter.<\/p>\n

Interfor reported its Q2 earnings on Thursday, which included updates on planned production curtailments. In Q2, lumber production reached 1.0 billion board feet, a decrease of 35 million board feet from the previous quarter, partly due to temporary curtailments announced on April 30th and the indefinite closure of the Philomath, Oregon sawmill. In response to ongoing market weakness, Interfor plans to reduce total lumber production by 280\u2013350 million board feet between August and December 2024, representing 15\u201318% of normal operations. The company also announced a $6.6 million discretionary investment, primarily for the multi-year rebuild of the Thomaston, Georgia sawmill.<\/p>\n

On June 27th, Interfor sold the property and assets of the former Philomath sawmill for $15.0 million, recording a net non-cash charge of $4.3 million. Additionally, the company sold Coastal BC forest tenures, totaling 50,000 cubic meters of allowable annual cut (AAC) and related assets, for $8.3 million, realizing a gain of $8.2 million. After the quarter ended, on July 29th, Interfor sold 104,689 cubic meters of AAC for $13.2 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
