According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the average price for European lumber in June is about 10% higher than that of domestic lumber. This increase is due to the weakening yen and rising maritime logistics costs, which have raised the procurement costs for Japanese trading companies. As prices for domestic lumber continue to rise, its demand is also growing.

According to the ministry, the average transaction price for European whitewood (3 cm x 10.5 cm x 3 cm), used as studs in walls, was 33,400 yen (approximately 214 euros) per cubic meter in June, a 1% increase compared to the same month last year. This price is 11% higher than that of domestically sourced cedar with the same specifications. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, imported lumber from Europe and the US, known for stable supply, was generally cheaper than domestic lumber. However, the global "wood shock" triggered by the pandemic and supply concerns due to the Ukraine crisis caused imported lumber prices to surpass domestic prices by mid-2022. Although the prices of Japanese imported lumber significantly dropped as the wood shock subsided, reaching parity with domestic lumber in April 2023, by the latter half of 2023, imported lumber prices once again started to exceed those of domestic lumber. By June 2024, the price gap had widened further compared to May.

One major factor is the increase in procurement costs for Japanese trading companies due to the weakened yen, which they have passed on to selling prices. Additionally, increased global maritime logistics costs due to the avoidance of navigation through the Red Sea have also been transferred to prices. According to specialized trading companies importing European lumber, the price hike in raw logs is also a contributing factor. A reduction in production at European sawmills, due to sluggish construction demand, has tightened the supply of imported lumber to Japan, further driving up prices.

In contrast, domestic Japanese cedar lumber prices have been weakening due to a cooling domestic housing market. The price for domestic cedar studs was 84,200 yen (approximately 539 euros) per cubic meter in June, a 1% decrease from May and 7% lower than the same month last year. As 2024 progresses, industry stakeholders in Japan report increasing demand for domestic lumber due to its relative affordability. Comments from the industry include, "Last year, customers using American and European lumber switched to domestic sources," and "Cedar is being chosen over imported options due to its lower cost."

Despite rising production costs, including transportation and raw log prices, domestic lumber prices have not reflected these increases due to the long-term slump in the housing market. With the yen continuing to weaken, procurement costs for Japanese trading companies importing lumber are increasing. This burden is seen as greater than that for domestic procurement, suggesting that the transaction prices for imported lumber in Japan may continue to rise.

The price increase of imported lumber for housing construction in Japan is becoming more noticeable.
