According to the data from the General Administration of Customs, the China's import volume of logs in the first half of the year was 18.81 million cubic meters, a decrease of 7.35% from the same period in 2023. In terms of import value, the total import volume of logs in the first half of 2024 was US$3.268 billion, a decrease of 8.37% from the same period last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Monthly data fluctuation analysis<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the monthly data, the fluctuation of log import volume is quite obvious. The import volume in January and May decreased significantly year-on-year, reaching 12.69% and 4.12% respectively; while in March and April, the year-on-year growth was 7.90% and 6.58% respectively. However, the import volume in June changed greatly and fell sharply again, down 29.75% year-on-year, becoming the month with the largest decline in the first half of the year.<\/p>\n

In terms of the average unit price of imports (CIF), although there was a slight overall decline in the first half of the year (1.10%), there were large fluctuations between months, especially in June, when the unit price increased by 10.58% year-on-year, indicating the instability of market prices.<\/p>\n

Performance of major suppliers<\/strong><\/p>\n

The main sources of China's log imports include New Zealand, the United States, Papua New Guinea, Russia and Europe.<\/p>\n

Among them, New Zealand ranked first with a market share of 48.9%, and its year-on-year growth was 5%, showing strong performance. The United States saw a slight decline (-2% to 1.12 million cubic meters), while Papua New Guinea (-14%) also showed a downward trend in log exports to China.<\/p>\n

The export volume of Solomon Islands (+18%), Japan (+9%) and Canada (+16%) increased, while the export volume of European countries such as Germany (-64%), Poland (-29%) and France (-27%) decreased significantly. In addition, after the resumption of log trade with Australia, the total amount of logs imported from Australia in the first half of the year reached 330,000 cubic meters.<\/p>\n

Changes in market demand for log species<\/strong><\/p>\n

The market demand for different log species varies. Radiata pine logs and oak logs showed a growth trend in market demand, with both import quantity and value increasing.<\/p>\n

However, fir and spruce logs ,Douglas fir logs, red pine and Scots pine logs are facing downward pressure on import volume and value. In particular, the import value of fir and spruce logs has dropped by 61%. Although the import volume of birch and beech logs remains stable or slightly decreased, the increase in value may reflect the trend of rising prices.<\/p>\n

China's log import market faces multiple challenges and changes in the first half of 2024. Economic slowdown, rising logistics costs, unstable supply and seasonal factors have jointly acted on the market, leading to a decline in the total import volume and amount. At the same time, the performance of different exporting countries and log species also showed significant differences.
