The company is anticipating a revival in the construction industry in Europe and is considering expansion to other continents.

On a sunny day, the largest sawmill in the Czech Republic, located in Paskov, Ostrava, marked its twentieth anniversary with a celebration. Employees, business partners, and the company’s management, including the Austrian billionaire owner Franz Mayr-Melnhof-Saurau (in the photo above, on the right), gathered for the occasion. Paskov was the first international venture for Mayr-Melnhof Holz, with an initial investment of €60 million, around 1.5 billion CZK at that time. Reflecting on the early days, Mayr-Melnhof-Saurau recalled, “When I was growing up, I never knew what was on the other side of the border. I remember the worst part of the journey to Paskov was between Vienna and the border. After that, there were highways and good infrastructure.”

The sawmill sources timber from Czech, Slovak, and Polish forests. According to Richard Stralz (in the photo above, on the left), the group's CEO, "It’s cost-effective to source raw material within roughly a 150-kilometer radius from the mill. Beyond that, the transportation costs make it impractical." At its peak during the bark beetle crisis in 2019, Paskov processed nearly 1.5 million cubic meters of wood. “That was a remarkable achievement for a single line, made possible by the excellent team we have here,” Stralz praised.

The primary products of the Paskov mill are Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels used in construction. These are supplied to markets globally, including Europe, the United States, Africa, and Asia. However, the high cost of Czech timber has recently impacted its global competitiveness, leading to reduced production. “Czechia had the highest roundwood prices in the world. Our products are sold on the global market, where prices do not reflect the high costs of input materials. Therefore, we had to cut back on production,” Stralz explained.

Despite this, Mayr-Melnhof Holz is optimistic about the future. The company expects increased lumber production when the European construction industry revives. This sector has stagnated due to high interest rates and material costs. A significant housing shortage in Germany and other countries is likely to trigger a construction boom. Germany, for instance, requires about 400,000 new homes annually but currently builds only about 230,000. Stralz is confident about the impending boom: “In Germany, the annual demand is around 400,000 apartments, but only about 230,000 are being built. Overall, there is a shortage of about a million homes. This can only mean one thing – sooner or later, there must be a massive construction wave.”

Adding to the potential demand, the climate crisis is pushing some countries to subsidize wooden constructions because wood stores carbon dioxide, preventing it from escaping into the atmosphere. "Some states are subsidizing timber buildings because they conserve the CO2 stored in the wood, which helps in combating the climate crisis," Stralz noted.

Mayr-Melnhof Holz also delivers heating pellets and wood chips to neighboring Biocel Lenzing, emphasizing the efficient use of all wood by-products. “All the scraps, offcuts, and sawdust are sent there. From cellulose, products like clothing are made,” explained Mayr-Melnhof-Saurau.

Besides Europe, Mayr-Melnhof Holz has explored investments outside the continent. After venturing into Germany and Sweden, the company expanded to Russia in 2009 but sold its plant there in 2022 due to the Ukraine war and ensuing sanctions. “When the war started and sanctions were imposed, we decided to sell the business. It cost us a lot because the Russian authorities set the accounting value of the company and gave us a take-it-or-leave-it offer. We chose to leave because we don't see trade with Russia resuming in the next few years,” Stralz recounted.

Despite the current slowdown in the wood industry, the Austrian company is looking for new opportunities. Stralz revealed, “We have one criterion, and that is the availability of raw material. If we find a suitable place from which we can efficiently supply the market, we will work on it. In Europe and the USA, such locations are scarce, but in South America, there is plenty of space.”

As the company waits for the European construction industry to rebound, it remains committed to exploring new markets and leveraging its resources effectively. The leadership believes that with the critical housing shortage and the growing emphasis on sustainable construction, a construction boom is inevitable. "People need places to live, and when they don’t have them, they will fight for them. That’s why we know that the revival in construction has to happen,” Stralz concluded.

The Paskov sawmill is part of the Austrian family holding Mayr-Melnhof Holz.
