One reason for this is the plummeting world market prices. Another is the collapse of the construction industry in Germany. Forest owners fear that the new regulations (EUDR) from Brussels will exclude many small forest farmers from the market.

The collapse of wood prices on the world market is also having an impact on wood prices in Germany via export prices . Added to this is the ongoing difficult situation in the construction industry in Germany and Europe.

The pressure on wood prices varies greatly from region to region. In many places, prices are significantly reduced in new contracts with sawmills and they often have a very short term. Wood prices are currently in flux and have a short shelf life, it is said. Sometimes only daily prices are paid.

" Many sawmills are currently running production on a case-by-case basis," say forest owners. Demand for roundwood has plummeted in many places and sawn wood sales are continuing to shrink due to the collapse of the construction industry. Forest owners' associations are therefore recommending that their members reduce the felling of fresh wood and concentrate on processing damaged wood.

The large sawmills often buy mainly beetle-infested wood. Small sawmills usually ask directly if they have current orders. In addition to the weak lumber market, the sharp decline in exports is also putting pressure on prices

Due to the weak demand and the comparatively high supply, forest warehouses have been set up in several regions. In addition, due to the persistently high rainfall in many regions, the accessibility of forest roads and the removal of timber remains restricted.

Despite these logistical problems, numerous forest owners' associations report that sawn timber prices are continuing to fall. For fresh timber (grade BC, strength class 2b+), prices fluctuate widely, mainly between 80 and 95 euros per cubic metre.

Industrial wood and energy wood under pressure

The industrial wood market is also under pressure due to the large supply of pulpwood. Industrial wood assortments often go to the energy wood market because the paper and chipboard industries are oversupplied.

But the situation on the energy wood market is also tense. Forest owners report that additional quantities are hardly being sold. The reason: low consumption in the last heating season and correspondingly high stock levels.

At the same time, a large amount of industrial roundwood is flowing into the energy wood market, further dampening demand. Due to the mild winter, heating plants have used significantly less chipping material. Wood chip prices have fallen significantly.

Forest owners fear that the upcoming beetle-infested wood processing may mean that new chippings will have to be used for other purposes. The further development depends on the amount of damaged wood.

The first generation of bark beetles is often already fully developed. This means that they swarm again and form a second generation, report forest owners.

Therefore, spruce stands should be checked more frequently for new bark beetle infestations and damaged trees should be quickly removed from the forest.

Forest farmers fear market exclusion

Forest owners warn that without an early postponement of the entry into force and a revision of the current EU regulation on deforestation-free supply chains (EUDR), there is a risk of a shortage of sustainably produced wood from Germany with serious consequences for industry and consumers.

Representatives of forest owners warned of this at a meeting. The deputy chairman of the NRW Forest Farmers' Association, Eberhard von Wrede, explained what concrete effects could be expected in German regions if the EUDR were actually implemented in its current form.

"The far-reaching technical obligations, coupled with the unclear specifications from Brussels, are overwhelming the forest owners, not least a large number of the smaller forest owners in the region. They are threatened with exclusion from the market," said Wrede.

"Although these forest owners often only own a few hectares of forest, they are very important for the provision of sustainably produced wood, especially when they are organized as forest cooperatives," explains Wrede. There is therefore a risk of a shortage of wood, which will harm industry and consumers.

Wood prices are also coming under pressure in Germany.
