In May, the Latvian State Forestry Service (VMD) imposed a 10,000 euro fine on a company that planned to import birch plywood from Turkey<\/span>, the real country of origin of the wood might be Russia, the State Forestry Service informed.<\/p>\n

The company also received an additional penalty - a one-year ban on using the right to put birch plywood on the market.<\/p>\n

The penalty was imposed for legality checks that did not meet the requirements of the Timber Regulation of the European Union (EU), allowing the risk that timber of Russian origin is placed on the market.<\/p>\n

VMD did not name a specific company that was fined.<\/p>\n

VMD reminds that it is still not allowed to import timber or wooden products, in the production of which raw materials obtained in Russia or Belarus were used. Importing such products means violating the requirements of the EU Timber Regulation, as it is not possible for the raw materials to reduce the risk to \"negligible\" in order to be allowed to be placed on the EU market. On the other hand, timber and wooden products produced in Russia or Belarus and subject to EU sanctions are considered illegally obtained.<\/p>\n

If a company intends to import a high-risk product, such as birch plywood, it must rule out any possibility that the plywood was produced or the timber was obtained in Russia or Belarus, explained VMD. Similarly, if, for example, furniture is imported from China or any other third country, the producers of which could use timber originating from Russia or Belarus, the possibility that they may contain raw materials from these countries must be ruled out.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
