The market opportunities for softwood lumber are restrained, particularly due to the sharp decline in private house construction. The construction industry is somewhat supported only by large-scale commercial construction. Accordingly, the Austrian sawmill industry is currently sufficiently stocked with softwood logs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Logging activities are focused on processing damaged wood and planned maintenance interventions. Supplied wood is promptly transported away, and existing forest stocks have been depleted. Due to the storms and severe weather of recent weeks, additional quantities of damaged wood, especially in Tyrol, have been generated, but these can be accommodated in the market.<\/p>\n

Prices remain largely stable across a wide range, with the main assortment of spruce A\/C 2b+ fetching between 81 and 105 euros nationwide. The demand for larch continues to exceed the supply, unchanged from the previous month.<\/p>\n

Industrial wood<\/strong><\/p>\n

The paper, pulp, and panel industry locations are very well stocked with industrial roundwood. The sale of pulpwood is hardly possible due to a lack of buyers. Supply and demand for fiberwood are currently balanced. The locations are still able to accept more wood, and supplied quantities are continuously transported away. Except for Lower and Upper Austria, where there has been a decrease, prices are stable. Nationwide, prices for spruce\/fir fiberwood range between 63 and 98 euros per ton air-dried. Prices for beech fiberwood remain unchanged.<\/p>\n

Energy wood<\/strong><\/p>\n

The energy wood market is currently tense. Marketing additional quantities outside of long-term contracts is hardly possible. This is due to the reduced consumption during the last heating season and, consequently, high stock levels and an increased supply from damage events. In some cases, producers are setting up additional dry storage to ease the market.<\/p>\n

Regarding bark beetle infestation, despite the rainfall, no all-clear can be given due to the high temperatures. Even at elevations above 1,000 meters, the second generation is expected to establish in one to two weeks. Therefore, forest hygiene should be given the utmost attention. Infested trees should be removed immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
