Sales in the sawmill industry have shrunk significantly. This scenario will also determine the future development of wood prices.

The German sawmill industry continues to be well stocked with softwood logs. Relatively high stocks were also reported in May. At the same time, demand is relatively subdued both on the domestic market and in exports. In the first quarter of 2024, sales in the German sawmill industry fell by 17% to EUR 1.3 billion compared to the same period last year. Domestic sales fell by 20% to EUR 723 million. This decline in sales is mainly due to lower sales volumes; softwood prices remained relatively stable in most regions.

Spruce prices somewhat stable

This is also confirmed by the price reports from the Federal Statistical Office for spruce and pine wood (see graphic). Depending on the region, between €90 and €105/m3 were paid for the flagship range of spruce A/C 2b+ in May. On average, the price is likely to be €100/m3 net. At the same time, spruce prices are around 10% lower than a year ago. Prices for beetle-infested and D-wood have mostly been reduced more sharply, report forest owners' associations. Depending on the buyer, discounts of €30 to €35/m3 are reported.

Due to the persistent rainfall in many places and the poor accessibility, forest stocks are very high in many regions. In addition, due to the numerous holidays in May, delivery times to the sawmills were sometimes restricted, which meant that wood could not be transported and marketed as planned. Forest owners fear problems with forest hygiene, particularly in view of the development of the bark beetle.

Keeping bark beetles in check

Many German forest owners therefore point out that the somewhat cooler weather of the last few weeks has only slowed down the development of bark beetles. Therefore, material suitable for breeding should be processed and removed as quickly as possible. However, this is often difficult due to persistent rainfall and poor accessibility. As temperatures rise, the bark beetle will develop rapidly again. For this reason, it is very important to check the spruce stands in order to detect the infestation as early as possible, say forest owners' associations.

The hardwood season is now over. According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, prices for beech wood were recently around 13% lower than last year. Forest owners also received 13% less for oak wood than a year ago.

Wood sales on the domestic market and in exports collapsed

In May, the business situation of German softwood sawmills improved somewhat. The sawmills assess their current situation as sufficient. In addition, expectations for the next three months were less pessimistic than before. However, exports fell significantly in the first quarter, which significantly limits sales opportunities.

Construction industry slows down sawn timber market

Exports of rough sawn softwood lumber in the first three months of 2024 were around 9% lower than a year ago, at 1.4 million m³. Exports of softwood logs even fell by 36% to 1.1 million m³ compared to the same period last year. German exports of softwood industrial lumber shrank by 23% to 470,000 m³ compared to the same period last year.

However, weak sales of construction timber on the domestic market are likely to be one of the biggest problems on the timber market: In the first quarter of 2024, the construction of a total of around 53,500 apartments was approved in Germany. Compared to the same period last year, this represents a decline of 22%, and compared to the first quarter of 2022, the decline is almost 40%.

Hardwood market also under pressure

Hardwood sawyers are also relatively critical of the market outlook. The business climate there cooled noticeably in May 2024. The positive expectations of the previous month have given way to clear pessimism.

Wood prices in Germany barely changed in May, despite difficult sales conditions for both construction timber and exports.
