A veneer dryer damaged in a major fire at Pollmeier was repaired and upgraded with a stacker system and veneer scanner. <\/span><\/p>\n

Grenzebach repaired the fire-damaged veneer dryer and integrated it into a new production line, addressing the challenges posed by the limited space, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a tight schedule. The upgrade included a stacker system with scanner technology, all within the existing building footprint. This minimized downtime and allowed Pollmeier to operate the production line independently of the stacker system used with the previously shared dryer.<\/p>\n

Pollmeier operates Europe's largest and most advanced hardwood sawmills. In 2021, a fire at its main factory in Creuzburg, Thuringia, damaged the only existing beech veneer dryer, threatening significant production downtimes. The belt dryer needed to be rebuilt quickly to resume operations. Pollmeier also aimed to run the dryer independently of the previously shared stacker system.<\/p>\n

Grenzebach set up an integrated production line on the same floor space as before, allowing for independent operation. The repaired dryer is now part of a high-performance stacker system with four lift tables and an integrated veneer with the upstream inspection system scanning the veneers in an automatic, non-contact process. Defects such as holes or cracks are detected, classified, and logged. Most components, including handling equipment, were supplied by Grenzebach to match the production line requirements.<\/p>\n

The project presented several challenges for Grenzebach, including the need to accommodate a complete, independent stacker system within the existing floor space. Additionally, the project faced changing plant parameters during construction and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to staff shortages and delivery delays. As a result, the planning and software development were frequently adjusted to meet Pollmeier\u2019s specific needs.<\/p>\n

After 16 months of planning and construction, Grenzebach delivered a complete production line to Pollmeier Furnierwerkstoffe. The new stacker system allows the line to operate independently of the previously used stacker system, enhancing the flexibility of the veneer mill.<\/p>\n

In terms of quality control, the Grenzebach veneer scanner detects and classifies defects in the veneers, sorting them according to specified quality grades. The integration of a moisture detector further ensures quality assessment, enabling the veneers to be processed based on their quality.
