The Finnish timber industry is suffering losses due to falling domestic demand and competition with Russia in the North African market, <\/span>Tino Aalto, head of the Finnish Sawmill Industry Association said to Finnish media.<\/p>\n

Aalto described the situation as \u201cvery difficult\u201d: Russian timber producers have developed new markets in North Africa, Japan and China, where Finnish companies have been operating.<\/p>\n

Domestically, Finland\u2019s lumber production has fallen from 12 million cubic meters to 10.5 million cubic meters since 2021, of which 8.5 million is exported. 20 years ago, the country consumed more than 5 million cubic metres of sawn timber per year, but now significantly fewer wooden buildings are being built.<\/p>\n

In March 2024, the Finnish Sawmill Industry Association called on the EU to influence Japan so that Tokyo would stop buying Russian timber products. The appeal to Brussels was published on the official website of the Association.
