By the end of June, the Swedish company Norra Timber's investments announced two years ago at the K\u00e5ge and S\u00e4var sawmills are ongoing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Norra Timber is introducing new X-ray technology at its sawmills in northern Sweden to identify internal properties of logs, such as knots and other imperfections. The investment amounts to SEK 400 million (EUR 35.3 million), according to Industry Manager Henrik J\u00f6nsson.<\/p>\n

Advanced X-ray technology<\/strong><\/p>\n

The S\u00e4var sawmill, which implemented its first X-ray equipment in 2017, saw an increase in production of 6,000 cubic meters of timber planks per year. Building on this, Norra Timber has acquired more advanced equipment to further increase profits. The new technology uses AI to optimize log processing and assess log quality.<\/p>\n

\"The equipment produces X-rays just like in a hospital. The difference is that this scanning is faster. Each log only takes two seconds to process,\" J\u00f6nsson said.<\/p>\n

The new X-ray technology, expected to be fully operational by autumn 2025, will scan logs upon arrival to assess dimensions and internal properties.<\/p>\n

K\u00e5ge Sawmill's modernization<\/strong><\/p>\n

K\u00e5ge Sawmill, known for producing spruce and pine products, continues to enhance operational efficiency. Recent investments have enabled the scanning of all logs, ensuring complete utilization of raw forest material.<\/p>\n

\"We now use 100 percent of the logs. Bark, chips, and sawdust are used as biofuel and heating by the sawmill, with any surplus sent to the nearby district heating network,\" said Joakim Larsson.<\/p>\n

Technological advancements<\/strong><\/p>\n

Larsson noted that these investments align with the broader goal of supporting sustainable practices by producing durable timber products. Historical wooden structures in the region, such as Bonnstan church village in Skellefte\u00e5 and L\u00f6v\u00e5nger church village, exemplify the longevity of timber constructions.<\/p>\n

Henrik J\u00f6nsson highlighted the significance of the new timber sorting facility, saying it allows the company to optimize processes and maintain product quality by tracing each log.<\/p>\n

A reconstruction of the grading mill intake at K\u00e5ge Sawmill has also been completed, increasing capacity by 10 percent.<\/p>\n
