When the economy is weak, less wood is used, and there is, for example, very little construction in Sweden right now. Then the wood is saved in the forest and taken out when demand returns.

What is unique now is that the prices are kept up. Russian timber has disappeared from the European market due to sanctions, and in the aftermath of the spruce bark beetle attacks in Central Europe, timber supply is decreasing. This helps to keep the price level up.

How do we ensure that we always have access to Swedish timber?

''It is largely the forest's growth that affects how much forest can be felled. Today, we clear approximately one percent of the forest area annually. Through active forestry and good planting material, we have more than doubled our timber supply in a hundred years.''

Are there any rules for how much wood can be cut in a year?

''Forestry must comply with the Forest Protection Act and environmental legislation, but there is no regulated maximum harvesting level. On the other hand, there are rules about the minimum harvesting age for the forest. The state of the economy as well as any damage, such as storm felling or spruce bark beetle attack, is what in practice determines how much wood is felled in individual years."

Will EU legislation limit logging levels?

"We are concerned that the Swedish implementation of EU legislation will have an unsustainable impact on Swedish forestry. The LULUCF regulation may mean felling restrictions for Sweden, because the removal of wood from the forest affects Sweden's carbon balances. Here we see that a greater focus on growth-enhancing measures is needed."

"Even the implementation of the nature restoration regulation , which was recently adopted by the EU, risks having major consequences for Swedish forestry. If Sweden does not approach how other EU countries assess the status of nature types and the need for restoration, it could mean that large areas of Swedish productive forest land are taken out of use, with significant consequences for the forest industry's supply of raw materials. In the long run, this means challenges for climate work and for access to jobs and welfare."

Source: Swedish Forest Industries Federation

In 2023, felling fell by six percent, and felling was thus the lowest in seven years.
