Although production volumes were adjusted due to economic activities to limit the spruce bark beetle, prices did not increase as anticipated. Instead, a slight decrease of around 5% was observed at the beginning of summer, impacting profits for forest owners.

Despite this stability in sawlog prices, the market for other softwood assortments has been more variable. Lower-quality logs, for instance, have seen fluctuating demand, with prices in Riga ports reaching up to 88 EUR per cubic meter. The market for softwood containers is also inconsistent, with prices varying significantly by region. In Kurzeme, prices sometimes exceed 70 EUR per cubic meter, while in other regions, they hover around 50-60 EUR.

Softwood Pulpwood

Softwood pulpwood prices, which had been low over the past year, have shown an upward trend over the last six months. Currently, the average price is around 71-73 EUR per cubic meter in Latvian ports.

Birch

Birch veneer prices remained stable at 120-130 EUR per cubic meter until March. However, with the onset of spring, Latvian veneer factories reduced prices to 105-115 EUR per cubic meter and closed the market to private suppliers. This trend is expected to continue into autumn when factories may reopen to all suppliers without significant price increases.

Birch pulpwood prices, after a slight dip during the winter, have stabilized around 58-62 EUR per cubic meter. The market remains steady, influenced by regional demand and supply conditions.

Other Assortments

The market for hardwoods in Latvia is variable, with prices ranging between 50-55 EUR per cubic meter. Firewood prices have remained stable throughout the year, averaging 42-48 EUR per cubic meter, with coniferous firewood slightly more expensive. The woodchip market is less dynamic, with prices fluctuating between 9-12 EUR.

Recommendations for Forest Owners

Currently, the wood market in Latvia has stabilized, and no rapid price changes are expected in the near future. The high EURIBOR rate suggests that construction sector growth will remain slow, keeping timber demand steady. Forest owners are advised not to expect sudden price increases.

Over the last six months, the Latvian wood market has seen notable fluctuations in the prices of various assortments, including sawlogs, pulpwood, and veneer blocks.
