The ongoing Red Sea Crisis continues to severely disrupt global timber supply chains. Traders are struggling with escalating container costs and increased pressure on the global port system, leading to significant congestion in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yesterday, James Latham, a major timber merchant in the UK, reported that the crisis\u2014forcing the world\u2019s largest shipping companies to reroute $200 billion worth of trade around the Cape of Good Hope\u2014resulted in a 30% drop in profits for the 12 months ending March 31.<\/p>\n

In a statement to the London Stock Exchange, James Latham mentioned, \u201cThe cost prices from most of our manufacturers, excluding freight costs impacted by the Red Sea situation, are relatively stable,\u201d but also noted the uncertainty brought about by the current geopolitical instability and the upcoming UK general election.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Maersk, the world\u2019s second-largest container company by fleet size, indicated that trading conditions remain highly volatile due to the unpredictability of the Red Sea situation and the unclear future of supply and demand. The crisis is now adding 2-3 weeks to shipping times, with fuel costs rising up to US $1 million a week.<\/p>\n

Over 100 freight companies, including CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, Evergreen, and oil giant BP, have halted movements through the channel. Meanwhile, insurance premiums for those still using the Red Sea have skyrocketed nearly tenfold since the attacks began.<\/p>\n

The impact has been particularly significant in China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and European countries like the UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy, where increased timber cargoes are entering European markets via China and the ASEAN region.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
