<\/span>After two booming years in 2021-2022, the parquet industry has experienced a sharp downturn. In Europe, consumption plummeted by 30% in 2023, bringing the market down to the very low levels seen during the 2008 crisis. Some countries have seen a drastic collapse in demand within just one year; Germany is down 46%, Denmark-Finland-Norway 35%, and the Netherlands 30%. France, with a 19% decline, is not faring much better.<\/p>\n

The concern is that the market hasn't shown significant signs of recovery in the first quarter of 2024. According to the European Federation of the Parquet Industry (FEP), demand remains stagnant in France and Italy (-20%) compared to the first quarter of 2023. Germany is still seeing declines of 5% to 10%, while sales in Scandinavia and Switzerland seem to have stabilized.<\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7ois Burgi confirms the current difficulties in the sector. \"After a relatively good year in 2023, ending with a 9% decrease in our turnover, we are now seeing a more significant drop in our activity volume, estimated between 20% and 25%,\" said the president of SAS Parquet Protat. He attributes this business decline mainly to a decrease in exports to neighboring European countries whose economies remain troubled. \"On the other hand,\" he notes, \"decent sales in France somewhat offset this reduction in volume, thanks to our store in Lyon, our website, and our diversified offerings.\"<\/p>\n

David Chavot also observes a decline in parquet sales in recent months. \"Construction is not doing well, consumer confidence is low, the cost of borrowing remains high, and stockpiling exacerbates this gloominess,\" he explains. However, the director of Margaritelli France believes that the sector has hit the bottom of the downturn and that the worst is over for European parquet producers. \"We are now talking about lowering interest rates, stocks are starting to be absorbed, and we are entering the peak season, a favorable time for a resurgence in purchases.\"<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, as the first half of 2024 comes to a close, there are no clear signs of a strong recovery. FEP's forecasts are not particularly optimistic for the coming months: the European parquet organization hopes, at best, for a halt in sales decline and market stabilization in the second half of the year. \"After a very turbulent period - COVID, the war in Ukraine, disruptions in the Red Sea - the economic situation in Europe remains complicated,\" the FEP states. Currently, no one in the industry is predicting a recovery in the upcoming months.<\/p>\n

In a market strained by reduced demand, competition is fierce among operators. The FEP has continuously alerted European authorities to the unfair competition from certain producing countries. A positive development is that the European Commission has finally initiated an anti-dumping investigation against Chinese parquet imports sold at economically illogical prices. These worrying factors combined encourage European parquet professionals to approach the second half of the year with caution.<\/p>\n
