<\/span>Plans for a new large sawmill in Rundvik have been shelved as forest companies Holmen and SCA have decided to discontinue their joint venture. The companies announced last week that changing environmental and economic factors have led to the project's cancellation. Despite this, SCA remains optimistic about the future of its current operations, according to Jerry Larsson, Business Area Manager for SCA Wood.<\/p>\n

In October 2022, SCA and Holmen began a feasibility study for a large-scale sawmill in Rundvik. The study considered various development options and initially indicated favorable conditions. However, the companies recently concluded that the joint project is no longer viable. \"In good agreement with Holmen, we have ended up canceling the joint project,\" said Larsson.<\/p>\n

The decision is largely attributed to environmental uncertainties and market conditions. \"The political uncertainty regarding the role of forests in the climate transition and land use is a significant factor,\" Larsson explained. He also cited the impact of extensive bark beetle infestations in central Europe, which have reduced timber supply and intensified competition for raw materials. Additionally, inflation has escalated the investment costs, estimated to be several billion kroner.<\/p>\n

Larsson emphasized that the original plan required a substantial increase in saw volumes, which could disrupt the regional balance. \"The idea with a large sawmill was to increase sawing based on existing positions. There, SCA and Holmen today each have a good ability to supply the volume needs of existing operations, but with a joint large-scale sawmill, the saw volumes would have to increase in a way that we believe would not benefit the balance in the region,\" he said. He also noted the uncertainty surrounding EU legislation on species protection and forest management.<\/p>\n

Despite the project's cancellation, SCA is committed to enhancing its current sawmill operations in Rundvik. \"It is important to underline that SCA today has good control and can supply Rundvik's sawmill with existing saw volumes,\" Larsson stated. He highlighted a recent SEK 70 million investment in a new pellet plant and sawmill intake in Rundvikss\u00e5gen, noting the location's strategic advantages, including skilled personnel, excellent logistics, and proximity to transportation infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Looking forward, SCA intends to focus on internal growth and competitiveness. Larsson pointed out that SCA has been strengthening its sawmill operations across various sites, including Bollstabruk, Tunadal, G\u00e4ll\u00f6, and Munksund. He stressed the importance of coherent forest policies within the EU to support the industry's role in the climate transition and local economies. \"We think it is quite important that you actually try to understand what you want with forest policy within the EU and how it ultimately affects our ability to be part of the climate transition,\" he said.<\/p>\n

Larsson expressed satisfaction with the collaboration with Nordmaling municipality throughout the investigation and looks forward to ongoing cooperation. \"We are very satisfied with the support and cooperation regarding the investigation and look forward to continued good dialogue,\" he concluded, emphasizing the importance of local partnerships in<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
