However, some hopes come from a recovery in the construction sector which is expected in 2025 and 2026. GWMI has summarized some of the ongoing trends in the European wood industry from the main producing countries starting with countries in Northern Europe.

Nordic countries

Production and deliveries of Swedish wood products decreased slightly in 2023 compared to the previous year. However, future prospects in both the EU Single Market and in the US look good for the Swedish wood products industry.

Although the Swedish sawmills have raised the prices of wood for two years in a row, it is therefore even more difficult for them to get wood. As a result, sawmills have desperately expanded their purchasing areas farther and farther from the production facilities. In Sweden, this means that eyes are directed to Norway and southern sawmills are expanding their purchasing areas further north.

At the same time, Finnish wood companies are looking further and further into Sweden. The competitive situation has changed dramatically, and there is no sign of an improvement in the situation, as the economic situation is now expected to improve and sawn timber prices will rise.

Political strikes in March 2024 severely impacted Finland's forest industry, causing a significant drop in exports and imports. The value of forest industry exports fell to Euro 0.60 billion from a monthly average of Euro 1.00 billion in the previous year. This represents a sharp decline in economic activity in one of Finland's key sectors.

The outlook for Finland's forest industry is improving slightly this year. Sawmills are still burdened by the downturn in construction, whereas the production and export of pulp, paper, and cardboard are growing moderately. The recovery in construction and the general economic revival are expected to increase exports more noticeably over the next year.

The downturn in construction both in Finland and in key export markets continues to weigh on the demand, export, and production of sawn timber and plywood. Due to the situation, prices cannot rise much faster than inflation.

Next year, when construction begins to recover, there is a slight improvement visible, and the export and production volume of sawn timber will increase somewhat.

Plywood exports decreased by 20% last year, and it would have decreased even more without the good demand from the U.S. market. Next year, plywood demand will finally recover as construction in Europe begins a cautious upward trend.

Baltic states

The Estonian timber industry continues to face challenges and some resiliency, and optimism has largely reversed for now. The summary of last year's sales revenue of the wood industry shows that the total turnover of the sector fell by 10% compared to the previous year. Three sawmills have been closed in the last two years. Large and stable wood industries that have kept jobs so far have started to lay off by now.

Since the demand of the Scandinavian markets has decreased, Estonian wood manufacturers have to do active sales work and look for new markets. But the crisis is everywhere, including elsewhere in the European Union.

The decline in turnover of Estonian loggers that lasted the whole of last year continued in the first quarter of 2024 in aggregate volumes. The overall cooling of the economy has clearly affected the price of wood.

During the corona, wood prices shot up vertically, but they came down just as quickly after the price rally. On the other hand, in the first quarter of 2024, certain signs of stabilization or even price growth in some assortments could be seen. However, the low demand has clearly reduced the volumes, and the turnover of the entire forest sector is still in decline.

No major changes are expected in the Estonian wood sector until autumn 2024. It can be assumed that wood prices will still rise somewhat, due to the fall in logging activities in the spring. On the other hand, poor demand does not yet favor volume growth. Also behind the current spring price increase, especially in the pulpwood assortment, is the influence of the purchasing policy of Scandinavian industries, which have significantly increased their wood supplies from the Estonian market when spring arrives. The price increase does not mean revival of the local industry at the moment.

In 2023 The Lithuanian wood and furniture industry, which has experienced a strong contraction in production, seems to have overcome the most difficult period - data shows that most Lithuanian wood and furniture companies already have insufficient inventory levels.

The recovery of production in the wood industry and the slowing production decline in the furniture industry should not be confused with the recovery of demand in the markets of Western Europe and Scandinavia, on which the indicators of the Lithuanian wood and furniture industry largely depend. A strong focus on the sale of previously produced and unsold production had a significant impact on the recovery of the sector. Stock level balance in the wood industry in 2023 reached +29 points at the end, when in 2024 in April it already reached -6 points.

The Latvian forestry sector, which has so far successfully proven itself as a major exporter, is currently facing many challenges. The forestry sector, which has so far successfully proven itself as a major exporter, is currently facing many challenges. The demand for wood has decreased, thus the prices and profits of companies have also decreased.

Latvian manufacturers of softwood lumber encountered a significant drop in product demand and, consequently, in prices in the European and Asian markets, while the sawlogs needed for their production are forced to be purchased from the State Forest Manager of Latvia at high prices, as a result of which competitiveness has been lost and alarm bells are being rung, hoping for the involvement of ministers and the government to normalize the situation.

The situation is made even more difficult by the fact that in other competitor countries of Latvian softwood lumber producers, the same raw material - softwood sawlogs - can be purchased at significantly lower prices (even by 40%) than in Latvia.

The European wood industry is currently facing some challenging times.
