In June, China's log import market remained sluggish, with export prices showing only a very slight rise from May, which itself saw only a marginal increase from April. <\/span>This prolonged stagnation marks the first time in 15 years that prices have not rebounded after hitting the market bottom. Despite the bottom of this cycle being $15\/m\u00b3 higher than any dips in the last eight years, the situation remains challenging for the industry.<\/p>\n

The CFR price in China has seen a modest increase of around $10\/m\u00b3 over the past three months. However, rising shipping costs and fluctuations in the foreign exchange market have dampened any potential gains. Chinese on-port inventory decreased in June to approximately 3.4 million m\u00b3, down 600,000 m\u00b3 from May. Uplift from ports is running at around 70,000 m\u00b3 per day but is expected to decline as the hot season approaches and some workers return home for crop harvesting. Additionally, construction sites must pause for a few days during early June to reduce noise pollution during high school exams.<\/p>\n

New Zealand's log supply is beginning to decrease as the Taupo windthrow salvage concludes and the woodlot sector slows due to seasonal rains. There are still older cargos in China that need to be processed, but with reduced supply, inventories are expected to continue their downward trend. This reduction in supply could potentially lead to price increases in the future.<\/p>\n

Positive news emerged from the Chinese construction sector, with the government initiating its 'Three Major Projects' development plan. This includes the construction of affordable housing, renovation of urban villages, and the creation of recreational facilities that can be converted into emergency hospitals or accommodation. Some redevelopment projects have already begun, supported by a $50 billion injection from the People's Bank of China's Pledged Supplemental Lending program. While this is a positive development, the scale of the program is modest compared to the extensive debt-fueled construction of the past 16 years.<\/p>\n

In the broader market, New Zealand is sending three vessels to India in June, and there is potential for increased demand in that market. Although India's demand is still small compared to China's monthly tally of approximately 40 vessels, any reduction in supply to China could have a positive long-term impact.<\/p>\n

Domestic sawmills in New Zealand continue to navigate a softening market, with residential construction spending dropping from 6.1 billion to 5.3 billion over the past three quarters. This trend is likely to persist as long as the Reserve Bank maintains a high Official Cash Rate. Domestic pruned log supply remains higher than expected due to subdued export prices, diverting logs that would typically be exported into the domestic market.
