<\/span>Aspen Planers has temporarily shuttered its operations in Merritt, a move that has resulted in approximately 100 workers being laid off, underscoring the dire challenges facing British Columbia's forestry sector.<\/p>\n

According to Bruce Rose, Executive Vice President of AP Group, the decision to halt operations stems from what he describes as \"market realities\" plaguing the industry. The Merritt mill has been inactive for over a month, following a period in which it operated on a reduced schedule, running only a single daily shift for much of 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n

\"The whole forest industry in B.C., it's not an exaggeration, it's collapsing and it's just in a terrible state,\" remarked Rose, highlighting the widespread impact of the industry's downturn across the province. \"Just over the last couple of years, forestry jobs have been lost by the thousands.\"<\/p>\n

Central to the industry's struggles, Rose pointed out, is British Columbia's distinction as having the highest forest products manufacturing costs in North America. He identified several factors contributing to this challenging environment, including time delays, high costs associated with acquiring logs, and a scarcity of government-offered timber for auction.<\/p>\n

\"It's very difficult in forestry to get things done in B.C.,\" Rose lamented, underscoring the operational hurdles faced by companies in the province.<\/p>\n

Regarding when operations might resume in Merritt, Rose expressed uncertainty, stating, \"I do not know when Aspen Planers will open again.\" He emphasized that any potential return to production hinges on significant changes either in the cost structure within the industry or improvements in lumber market conditions, particularly concerning pricing.<\/p>\n

\"The whole current policy framework that we have, it just doesn't reflect any market realities of the current markets we're in,\" Rose criticized, suggesting that policy adjustments are essential to align with the challenging economic landscape.<\/p>\n

\"There's going to have to be some changes either in the cost structure or in the lumber market side in terms of pricing before we're in a position to return to local production,\" Rose concluded, outlining the necessary conditions for the industry's recovery in British Columbia.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
