The recovery of the global economy and the anticipated interest rate cuts by central banks will gradually increase the demand for Finland's forest industry products. <\/span>This can be seen especially in the growth of production and export volumes of pulpwood forest industry products. In the wood product industry, the demand for end products is estimated to grow significantly next year at the earliest. This year, the total felling of industrial and energy wood will increase and stumpage prices will rise, as the growing demand for wood is mainly directed to the home country.<\/p>\n

The prospects for the lumber market are still dim<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although demand on the softwood lumber export market has seasonally picked up in the spring of 2024 and the price level has risen, a significant recovery in the demand for sawn timber is not expected during the current year, as the reductions in the central bank's policy interest rates are transmitted via construction to the demand for softwood lumber only with a delay. In 2024, Finnish lumber production and export are predicted to remain at last year's level. Meanwhile, the average export price of lumber for the whole year is expected to rise by six percent from last year. The rise in wood costs weakens the profitability of sawmills, despite the rise in lumber prices.<\/p>\n

The demand for birch plywood in Europe is currently strong compared to the level of supply. The export price of Finnish plywood has increased in the early months of the current year compared to the level at the end of last year. However, production is limited by the availability of birch wood. The demand for softwood plywood has also picked up a bit since the beginning of the year, but a significant increase in demand is not expected until construction recovers. For the entire year 2024, the production and export of plywood is predicted to decrease by one percent and the average export price by three percent compared to last year.<\/p>\n

Another boom in the wood market<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2024, felling of pulpwood is predicted to grow by four percent to 63.3 million cubic meters. As the production volumes of the chemical forest industry increase, pulpwood felling will increase by five percent to more than 35 million cubic meters. The felling of log trees is expected to increase by three percent. The import of raw wood to Finland is expected to grow to just under five million cubic meters this year.<\/p>\n

Due to the growing demand, it is predicted that the prices of pulpwood will rise by 11\u201314 percent this year. It is estimated that the average carrying prices of softwood logs will increase by three percent. Due to the good demand for birch plywood, the carrying price of birch wood is predicted to rise by 13 percent. The reason for the continuing rise in softwood and birch log prices is also the growing demand for energy wood and the exclusion of Russia's and Belarus' supply of raw wood and forest industry products from the European market in the spring of 2022 following Russia's attack on Ukraine. The demand and price of domestic energy wood will also continue to rise, as it replaces previous imported energy and domestic peat. The average installation price of wood chips is expected to rise by 12\u201315 percent this year. Regional fluctuations are expected to remain large in the energy wood market.<\/p>\n

The production and export volumes of cardboard, paper and pulp will increase this year<\/strong><\/p>\n

The production and export volumes of cardboard, paper and pulp are increased by the cautious growth of demand and the end of buyers' destocking. The growth is partly explained by the weakness of the comparative level and the investments completed in Finland last year in terms of cardboard and pulp production. The unforeseen multi-month production stoppage at Mets\u00e4 Group's bioproduct factory in Kemi has the effect of significantly reducing the production and export of pulp, which is also reflected to some extent in cardboard. The export and production figures are also somewhat negatively affected by the political strikes at the beginning of the current year, which stopped exports for several weeks and limited production. The export and production of cardboard will grow this year by seven percent, pulp by five percent, and paper by a couple of percent.<\/p>\n

Although the average export prices of both cardboard and paper are at a high level and are recovering from last year's decline, the average prices remain lower than last year. The export price of cardboard is expected to decrease by four percent and that of paper by ten percent. Due to the increase in demand, pulp prices have been rising in Europe since last fall, and this has also been reflected in the increase in Finnish pulp export prices.
