The EU Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) came into effect on June 29, 2023, replacing the previous EU Timber Regulation. <\/span>This new regulation extends mandatory due diligence requirements to additional commodities, including cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soya, and wood. Under the EUDR, these commodities, or products containing them, cannot be placed on or exported from the EU market unless they are verified to be free from deforestation and forest degradation, produced in compliance with the relevant laws of the production country, and accompanied by a due diligence statement (DDS).<\/p>\n

Due diligence at UPM Plywood<\/strong><\/p>\n

UPM Plywood is implementing the EUDR through a due diligence process aimed at verifying that its products and the commodities used in them have not contributed to deforestation or forest degradation. As a downstream operator, UPM Plywood manufactures products from materials that have already undergone due diligence per EUDR requirements. Thus, the company\u2019s due diligence process involves referencing due diligence statements from its suppliers and ensuring that these suppliers have adequate due diligence systems in place.<\/p>\n

Before placing its products on the market, UPM Plywood will submit a DDS to the EU Information System Traces. This system will generate a reference number associated with the DDS, which UPM Plywood will then share with its customers.<\/p>\n

Process overview<\/strong><\/p>\n

The process of EUDR implementation at UPM Plywood is as follows:<\/p>\n

Supplier DDS Submission:<\/em> Suppliers of wood or other relevant commodities provide the initial DDS with geolocation information to Traces and receive associated reference numbers.<\/p>\n

Incorporation into UPM Plywood DDS:<\/em> UPM Plywood includes all relevant reference numbers from the raw materials received into their own DDS.<\/p>\n

Market Placement:<\/em> After submitting their DDS, UPM Plywood receives a reference number, which is forwarded to customers when placing products on the market.<\/p>\n

Transition and compliance<\/strong><\/p>\n

UPM Plywood is taking necessary steps to comply with the EUDR during the transition period before its full application in December 2024.
