According to China Customs, softwood lumber imports in the first quarter of 2024 totaled 6.71 million cubic meters valued at US$1.662 billion, up 3% in volume and 0.2% in value compared to the first quarter of 2023. However, the average price for imported softwood lumber was US$248 (CIF) per cubic meter, down 3% over the same period of 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of total softwood lumber imports, softwood lumber imports dropped 2% to 4.34 million cubic meters and accounted for 65% of the national total. The average price for imported softwood lumber fell 1% to US$201 (CIF) per cubic meter over the same period of 2023.<\/p>\n

Hardwood lumber imports rose in the first quarter by 13% to 2.37 million cubic meters and accounted for 35% of the national total. The average price for imported hardwood lumber fell 8% to US$333 (CIF) per cubic meter over the same period of 2023.<\/p>\n

Of total hardwood lumber imports, tropical hardwood lumber imports were 1.83 million cubic meters valued at US$512 million CIF, up 33% in volume and 25% in value from the same period of 2023 and they accounted for 27% of the national total import volume.<\/p>\n

However, the average price for imported tropical hardwood lumber was US$280 CIF per cubic meter, down 6% from the same period of 2023.<\/p>\n

Russia, the largest supplier<\/strong><\/p>\n

Russia was, as in previous quarters, the largest supplier of China\u2019s softwood lumber imports in the first quarter of 2024. The proportion of China\u2019s softwood lumber imports from Russia accounted for 43% of the total softwood lumber import volume. China\u2019s softwood lumber imports from Russia rose 1% slightly to 2.914 million cubic meters over the same period of 2023.<\/p>\n

Thailand was the second largest supplier of softwood lumber imports in the first quarter of 2024. The proportion of China\u2019s softwood lumber imports from Thailand accounted for 18% of the total softwood lumber import volume.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s softwood lumber imports from Thailand surged 44% to 1.223 million cubic meters over the same period of 2023.<\/p>\n

China's softwood lumber imports from the USA decline considerably in the first quarter of 2024 dropping 18% to 267,000 cubic meters over the same period of 2023.<\/p>\n

In contrast, China\u2019s softwood lumber imports from Canada in the first quarter of 2024 grew 17% to 382,000 cubic meters over the same period of 2023.<\/p>\n

Main softwood lumber sources, first quarter of 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n

Russia was the largest supplier for China\u2019s softwood lumber imports in the first quarter 2024. 63% of China\u2019s softwood lumber imports are from Russia and imports from Russia rose 5% to 2.713 million cubic meters in the first quarter of 2024.<\/p>\n

Imports from Canada and Belarus, the second and third largest suppliers, rose 19% and 37% to 370,000 cubic meters and 267,000 cubic meters respectively in the first quarter of 2024.<\/p>\n

In contrast, China\u2019s softwood lumber imports from Finland, Sweden, and Germany fell 25%, 42%, and 38% respectively in the first quarter of 2024.<\/p>\n
