The associations are focusing on the European Union's Green Deal as the EU's most important policy package to lead Europe to climate neutrality by 2050. In addition, the entire economic system is to be transformed in a resource-efficient and sustainable manner. The approach contained in the Green Deal to strengthen the bioeconomy and expand the use of wood is positive. In its current direction, however, the Green Deal weakens proven, climate-friendly and regional value chains based on renewable raw materials. Some aspects of the Green Deal will lead to the use of the sustainable and renewable resource wood being restricted by placing large forest areas under even stricter legal protection, restricting forest management or accelerating carbon buildup in the forest.

New edition of the Green Deal with wood at the centre

The associations of the wood industries from Germany, Austria and Switzerland are calling for a Green Deal 2.0, which will encourage the increased use of wood from sustainably managed forests in Europe. The associations are appealing to the EU institutions and the member states to optimize the framework conditions for the use of wood now. They are calling for a clear political commitment to sustainable forest management. All previous Green Deal resolutions should be reviewed and corrected if they disproportionately restrict the use of the renewable and sustainable resource wood. A Green Deal is needed that guarantees reliable and economical availability of raw materials.

Climate protection through the use of wood

Climate protection, resource conservation, circular economy and sustainable business: the increased use of wood can contribute a lot to these goals. In the building sector in particular, wood can help to create climate-friendly living space as part of the renovation wave. In addition, wood significantly reduces CO2 emissions during construction and use. As a natural CO2 store, wood expands the natural carbon cycles in the forest by creating a CO2 sink in the built environment. A "second forest" is created in villages and cities. This maximization of the climate protection effects of forests and wood is accompanied by targeted impulses for a European bioeconomy that enable sustainable and long-term growth.

Strengthening competitiveness by avoiding bureaucracy

The creation of bureaucratic hurdles makes the production and use of climate-friendly products and thus the sustainable transformation more difficult. The associations support the goal of curbing global deforestation, but do not consider the Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR) in its current form to be the appropriate means. Against this background and in view of the many open questions regarding technical implementation, the associations are calling for a fundamental revision with practical specifications and an appropriate deadline for implementation in order to avoid distortions along the forest and wood value chain.

Economic importance of the forestry and wood industry in Europe

The economic importance of the forestry and wood industry is often significantly underestimated. The wood value chain network includes not only the raw material, but also the processed products and relevant services. It is complex and extensive. In 30 European countries (EU27, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom), the total gross value added, which includes all direct, indirect and induced effects attributable to the European forestry and wood industry, is around 1100 billion (1.1 trillion) euros. This corresponds roughly to the economic output of Spain or a share of 7.1 percent of the total economic output of these 30 countries. The industry secures around 17.5 million jobs across Europe. This corresponds approximately to the population of the Netherlands. For every job in the forestry and wood industry, a further 1.2 jobs are created or secured in other sectors. On average, 6 percent of employees in the 30 European countries are employed directly or indirectly by the forestry and wood industry.

The German Sawmill and Wood Industry Association, the Austrian Wood Industry Association and the Swiss Wood Industry are calling for the European Parliament elections on June 9, 2024 to set the course for a turning point with wood.
