Softwood log prices in Germany barely changed in May, despite difficult sales conditions for both construction timber and exports. Sales in the German sawmill industry have shrunk significantly. This scenario will also determine the future development of wood prices.<\/span><\/p>\n

The German sawmill industry continues to be well stocked with softwood logs. Relatively high stock levels were also reported in May. At the same time, demand on both the domestic market and in exports is relatively subdued.<\/p>\n

Currently, spruce prices are about 10% lower than a year ago, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the first quarter of 2024, sales in the German sawmill industry fell by 17% to EUR 1.3 billion compared to the same period last year. Domestic sales fell by 20% to EUR 723 million.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless , softwood prices remained relatively stable in most regions. This is also confirmed by the price reports from the Federal Statistical Office for spruce and pine wood. Depending on the region, between 90 and 105 euros per cubic meter (m3) were paid for the flagship range spruce A\/C 2b+ in May. On average, the price is likely to be 100 euros\/m3 net.<\/p>\n

In addition, expectations for the next three months were less pessimistic than previously. However, exports fell significantly in the first quarter, which significantly limits sales opportunities.
