<\/span>\"The\u00a0 Austrian wood industry held up relatively well in 2023 in a difficult environment. The ongoing weakness of the construction industry is also leaving its mark on our industry.\" This is the conclusion drawn by Herbert J\u00f6bstl, Chairman of the Austrian Wood Industry Association. The 1,289 member companies of the Austrian Wood Industry Association sold goods worth \u20ac9.8 billion in 2023, a decrease of 18.5% compared to the previous year. \"We are seeing a trend of declining production across Europe and worldwide. In Austria, the wood industry is still well positioned in view of the recession,\" emphasizes J\u00f6bstl. But export figures are also lower. The foreign trade surplus was \u20ac1.5 billion in 2023, a decrease of 14%. \"Our companies were able to hold their own at a high level on the international markets. With the right economic policy framework, the wood industry will remain successful in the future,\" emphasizes J\u00f6bstl.<\/p>\n

In view of the ongoing weak construction economy, the timber industry association is calling for further stimulus to revive the order situation in the construction industry. \"We assume that construction activity will not increase in the short term. Building permits are still declining. Projects that are not financed and approved now will not be built later,\" says Dr. Andreas Ludwig, deputy chairman of the Austrian timber industry association. The federal government's latest housing package has been welcomed by the timber industry's interest groups. \"With the housing package, the federal government is taking a step in the right direction. However, until our companies actually receive orders, transitional measures such as deferrals and installment payments for claims from the tax office and social insurance providers are necessary,\" demands Ludwig. If the measures adopted so far are not sufficient, further stimulus is necessary, for example the refund of VAT on construction services and materials. The regulation for sustainable procurement standards in the financing of residential real estate (KIM-VO) can also be suspended in view of the high interest rates and stagnating real estate prices in order not to further restrict access to private construction financing. \"If the weak construction economy continues for a long time, we will lose skilled workers and production capacity permanently. If demand picks up again later without sufficient production capacity being available, there is a risk of supply bottlenecks and rising prices for building materials,\" warns Ludwig and demands: \"We therefore continue to push for anti-cyclical investment incentives in order to maintain domestic value creation and jobs and to create the necessary living space.\"<\/p>\n

During the European Parliament's legislative period, which is soon to end, there have been frequent and controversial debates about forests and wood in connection with the Green Deal. \"We expect the newly elected EU Parliament and the new EU Commission to come up with a Green Deal that includes the wood value chain and does not go over our heads,\" demands Herbert J\u00f6bstl.<\/p>\n

One of the biggest burdens on the timber industry as a result of European legislation is the EU Deforestation Regulation, or EUDR for short. \"Of course, the timber industry welcomes the aim of the EUDR to stop global deforestation. The fundamental problem with the EUDR is that it does not add any value in terms of bureaucracy,\" emphasises J\u00f6bstl and explains: \"The EUDR applies not only to imports into the EU, but also to production and trade within the EU. Deforestation of large areas takes place on other continents, not in Austria or Europe. Nevertheless, our members must prove that the wood they process did not come onto the market through deforestation. Our companies mainly source their supplies from Austria and neighbouring regions of our neighbouring countries.\" Although the EUDR is to apply from January 2025, many questions about implementation are still open. The timber industry is therefore calling for a longer implementation period and for the EU Commission to take into account the processes in the supply chain and operational practice for further implementation. \"After the elections to the European Parliament, the EUDR must be fundamentally revised and adapted to practical requirements. Countries with proven stable, increasing forest areas, sustainable forest management and functioning law enforcement should be exempt from unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles,\u201d demands J\u00f6bstl.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
