Overall, the mood in the German wood industry changed only slightly in April 2024. <\/span>Although companies were less satisfied with the current business situation than in the previous month, they were more optimistic about the coming six months. The assessment of the current situation fell to -20.7 points in April (previous month: -19.9 points). The outlook for the next six months, however, improved to a value of -26.5 points (previous month: -27.7 points). The Main Association of the German Woodworking Industries (HDH) economic indicator rose marginally in April to -23.7 points (previous month: -23.8 points).<\/p>\n

Given the different levels of impact on the individual segments, the mood in the wood industry remained mixed. Companies in the construction-related sector of the wood industry (+25.6 points) and in prefabricated wood construction (+28.1 points) still assessed their current business situation as positive. However, expectations indicated negative developments in the coming months. In particular, the wood materials industry (-30 points), the construction-related sector of the wood industry (-47 points) and prefabricated wood construction (-52.6 points) recently looked to the future with concern: These segments expect a significant deterioration in the business situation in the next six months.<\/p>\n

Despite the slight improvement in the business climate, however, the HDH believes there is still no reason to sound the all-clear. The decisive factor is how the construction industry develops in the coming months. In the first two months of 2024, the number of building permits for new single- and two-family homes fell by 32% compared to the same period last year, and building permits for multi-family homes fell by around 24%. The increased construction costs and the poorer financing conditions are still putting pressure on construction demand. In their spring report, the leading economic research institutes initially expect further declines in residential construction investments and a stabilization only at the end of the year.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
