Czech Republic plans to support greater use of wood in the construction industry. Up to a quarter of newly constructed buildings could be made of wood in 2035, according to the ministries' plans. The state wants to process the strategic commodity, which today is mainly used as fuel or exported abroad, at home and thus increase its added value.

The Ministry of Agriculture, together with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of the Environment, prepared a strategic document "Raw Materials Policy for Wood", which will soon be discussed by the entire government. This analysis of the forestry and timber sector is aimed at greater use of raw materials in the country across disciplines and at the same time reducing the carbon footprint.

"Wood is sustainable and we want to promote its use more. We know that in the long term the Czech Republic will have a similar amount of wood as before, but its use must change. We want wood to be processed more domestically, to give it greater added value and use it far more, for example, in the construction industry," said Minister of Agriculture Marek Výborný (KDU-ČSL) in a press release and added: "In short, more wood and less concrete. "

Sustainable logging

According to the document, future sustainable logging is at around 14 to 15 million m 3 of wood per year, slightly lower than in the period before the bark beetle disaster.

The greatest potential has the use of wood in the construction industry, where a larger share of wooden buildings on the real estate market is expected. "One of the goals of the raw materials policy is to increase the share of wooden buildings on the market to 25 percent by 2035 and create rules for wooden buildings with a fire height of 12 to 22.5 meters, thereby facilitating their construction. We also want to use wood significantly more in the framework of public contracts," said Výborný.

Eduard Muřický, chief director of the economy section at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, emphasizes that wood should be understood as an "equal alternative to other building materials". According to him, this raw material has great potential for saving energy and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Wood also insulates well, is spatially flexible and pleasant to look at.

"The Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade is working to simplify the permitting process for wooden buildings, focusing on multi-storey buildings. By creating normative fire safety conditions for greater use of wood in the construction industry and introducing international ISO standards into the system of Czech technical standards, the technical barriers for the construction of multi-storey wooden buildings in the Czech Republic have been simplified, and we can gradually expect a boom in this segment of residential and commercial construction," says Muřický.

Less concrete, more wood.
