Catch numbers from bark beetle monitoring in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg reached new highs at the beginning of April.<\/span>
\n\u201cWith four-digit catch numbers at this time, new records were achieved in the southwest,\u201d said Dr. Markus Kautz, head of the bark beetle department at the Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg Forestry Experimental and Research Institute (FVA). He is observing how the bark beetles are spreading in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg. According to him, controls remain important for foresters and private forest owners . The bark beetle was active more early and intensively than ever before.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom 20 degrees Celsius onwards, we have to expect a continuation of the swarming flights of the overwintered beetles and a total of three generations of book printers this year. The risk of infestation will most likely continue to increase. This also applies to copper engravers and pine bark beetles, which also benefit from the early warm temperatures,\u201d says Kautz. With the longer growing season, the pests are active for longer periods of the year.<\/p>\n

He therefore continues to advise keeping an eye on the situation. New findings from the FVA showed that the bark beetle's start to swarm in spring is not largely determined by the length of the day, but rather by the temperatures.<\/p>\n

High bark beetle infestation in Bavaria<\/strong><\/p>\n

Also number of catches in Bavarian bark beetle monitoring has increased significantly again since the beginning of May 2024 due to the milder temperatures. The focus regions continue to be the Franconian Forest and the adjacent Fichtelgebirge, the Bavarian Forest and eastern Lower Bavaria.<\/p>\n
