A North Idaho lumber mill is set to close this summer due to ongoing pressures faced by timber companies in the region. Stimson Lumber Company has announced the permanent closure of its Plummer facility by August, despite the mill still being profitable.<\/span><\/p>\n

Specializing in producing studs from smaller trees typically measuring 4 to 8 inches in diameter, the Plummer mill primarily serves Home Depot and Lowes. However, recent market shifts have significantly impacted its profitability, leading to the decision to cease operations.<\/p>\n

Stimson Lumber has leased the property from the Coeur d\u2019Alene Tribe since 2007, but CEO Andrew Miller believes it's unlikely that another tenant will reopen the mill due to challenges in attracting and retaining skilled labor.<\/p>\n

At its peak, the mill employed around 100 workers and produced about 100 million feet of lumber annually. Today, it operates with just 22 workers, generating 35 million feet of lumber per year. Displaced workers will be offered positions at other Stimson locations.<\/p>\n

The COVID-19 pandemic initially boosted the lumber industry, driven by increased demand from a surge in home construction and renovations. However, the market has since cooled, leading to a surplus of lumber and plummeting prices.<\/p>\n

Rising expenses, including labor, fuel costs, and insurance rates, further strain manufacturers. Miller expressed hope for increased timber supply from the U.S. Forest Service's wildfire risk mitigation efforts but notes that little progress has been made.<\/p>\n

The closure of the Plummer mill adds to a string of recent shutdowns in the industry, signaling broader challenges for manufacturers in the region.
