Junnikkala's new export sawmill in Oulu\u00a0will be trimmed into working condition during the spring. The major investment of around 90 million euros is to produce 350,000 cubic meters of lumber per year, the main market of which is found abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n

Building a completely new sawmill is rare in Finland. In recent years, a few operating sawmills have been renovated or replaced with new plants, for example in K\u00e4rk\u00f6l\u00e4 and Tervola . A large sawmill was completed in Rauma a couple of years ago, which was Finland's largest sawmill investment of all time .<\/p>\n

Due to its size, the annual production of the new sawmill in Oulu is 350,000 cubic meters of lumber in full use, which means that it belongs to the group of large sawmills.<\/p>\n

''I won't say the order of magnitude, but at least this is the most efficient in Finland,'' says Veli-Matti Junnikkala, the second owner of the Junnikkala family business and the company's sales director .<\/p>\n

The profitability of the sawmill industry has been improved by automating and making production more efficient. Even so, there is still work for people at the sawmill. Junnikkala's new sawmill in Oulu directly employs around 70 workers and indirectly a couple of hundred.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mainly, the raw wood of the Oulu sawmill is pine, which accounts for about four fifths. 750,000 cubic meters go through the sawmill every year. The bark and wood produced as a byproduct of the sawmill is used in the Oulun Energia biopower plant near the sawmill.<\/p>\n

According to Finnish Sawmill Industry, the main markets for softwood lumber are, after Finland, Egypt, Japan and China, as well as the countries of Central Europe. In total, Finnish lumber is exported to more than 60 countries.<\/p>\n

In addition to the new sawmill in Oulu, the Junnikkala company also has sawmills in Kalajoki and Oulais. Their joint production is in the same category as the new sawmill in Oulu.<\/p>\n

''The main market for the entire company is in Finland, but in the future goods from Oulu will mainly go abroad,'' says Junnikkala's second owner, CEO Kalle Junnikkala .<\/p>\n

The main market for the new sawmill can be found across the seas and especially in Japan. Softwood lumber goes there, especially as a raw material for glulam beams, for which the slow-growing, close-grained northern pine is particularly well suited, says Veli-Matti Junnikkala.<\/p>\n

''They require wood with high strengths, and suitable wood can be found in this area,'' he says.<\/p>\n

Quiet life and growing markets<\/strong><\/p>\n

The profitability of the Finnish sawmills has fluctuated in recent years, but the outlook is believed to improve after a few quieter years. New types of building materials and different composite material solutions do not frighten the sawmill entrepreneur either.<\/p>\n

''The sawmill industry is not old-fashioned. Yes, there is still enough demand for planks. The world's demand for three surfaces is growing every year, so there is plenty of room for us there too,'' says Veli-Matti Junnikkala.<\/p>\n

According to Junnikkala, the use of wood is increasing in many places.<\/p>\n

''It's taking market shares from concrete and steel just because of the ecology,'' he says.<\/p>\n

Recently, large forest industry projects have been launched in northern Finland, which include Kemi's bioproduct factory and Stora Enso's Oulu cardboard factory, where a second production line is currently under construction . They mainly use fiber wood, leaving the sturdier log wood for the sawmills to use. At the Junnikkala sawmill, it is calculated that the sawmill has enough Northern Finnish logs as raw material.<\/p>\n
