Because of politics.

Due to a good supply of logs, numerous sawmills reduced the prices for softwood lumber in April. The flagship range of spruce sawlogs grade B, 2b+ currently achieves prices of an average of 93 to 103 euros per cubic meter, report German forest owner associations. These are up to 10 euros lower prices than last month.

The continued very tense market situation for sawn and sawmill residues, but also the high volume of roundwood and the roundwood contracts that were often fulfilled prematurely, were the reason why roundwood prices were revised downwards in April , German forest owners explain the current development.

he flagship range of spruce grade B, 2b+ currently achieves prices of an average of 93 to 103 euros per cubic meter, report forest owner associations. Prices are up to 10 euros lower than last month.

In many places the takeover is only carried out on a contingent basis. The forest camps that have emerged in recent months can only be gradually dismantled.

After the wood production at the end of the previous year was initially very limited due to very difficult weather conditions, the majority of wood harvesting has been concentrated in the first months of the current year. This has partly led to an overload of wood transport.

Accordingly, the sales opportunities for spruce sawn timber are declining compared to recent months. Forest owner associations therefore strongly recommend coordinating timing and quantities with buyers.

Price pressure for energy wood and industrial wood + danger of bark beetles

Due to the warm winter, the consumption of energy wood was significantly lower than expected, which led to sales problems for forest wood chips. In addition to significant price reductions, only small quantities can currently be sold.

There were also regional price reductions for firewood . Delays in delivery are the result. Prices for industrial roundwood are also under pressure. Prices for both softwood pulpwood and hardwood pulpwood are falling.

Many forest owners also point out: Due to the high temperatures in spring, it can be assumed that the period of bark beetle development is significantly extended . In many places, development has progressed to such an extent that the first beetle flights are taking place. Due to the bark beetle's extreme reproductive potential, it is so important that no logs are left behind in the forest.

A total of 70.6 million cubic meters of wood were felled in German forests in 2023. This means that logging was 10.3% lower than in the previous year (2022: 78.7 million cubic meters). As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports, lower logging due to forest damage was the main cause of this decline.

Forest owners are sounding the alarm – regulation and bureaucracy

And there is another problem for forest farmers and forest owners: With the joint campaign “Hands off the Federal Forest Act”, the major German forest associations are pointing out the dangers of a new forest law for the preservation and sustainable use of forests.

“If the federal government’s plans for more regulation and bureaucratization are implemented, the urgently needed, climate-resilient conversion and protection of forests will no longer be possible in many places,” it says.

“In plain language this means: more bans, more regulations, less common sense ! We want to protect the sustainably usable forest and prevent a jungle of regulations. That's why we say: Stay away from the Federal Forest Act! Nobody needs a new forest law, least of all the forest itself,” explains Max von Elverfeldt, federal chairman of the Land & Forst family businesses.

The campaign is supported by AGDW – The Forest Owners, which represents around two million forest owners in Germany.

The forest owners' interest groups are not only critical of the impractical requirements. A study comes to the conclusion that the considerations from the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, among other things with regard to the restriction of the choice of tree species or the limitation of other silvicultural and operational freedoms, are unconstitutional.

Wood prices in Germany are falling in April.
