The forest industry of the Republic of Karelia suffers from a lack of machines and spare parts. China has become the most important trading partner.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sanctions imposed by Western countries on Russia have hit the forest industry of Karelia hard. It has become difficult to buy European machines and equipment, and there are no spare parts for previously purchased machines.<\/p>\n

\"Usually we have used foreign machines in Karelia. Now spare parts have to be bought most often in a roundabout way. It will take much more time than before sanctions were imposed,\" says Karelia's Minister of Industry and Trade, Denis Gurkov .<\/p>\n

Karelian companies have directed their exports to \"friendly countries\". China has become the most important trade partner, where more than half of all exported lumber goes. Deliveries of Karelian products to India, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Egypt and Iran are also increasing.<\/p>\n

The forest industry is still the most important industry in the Republic of Karelia. Its share of the republic's industry is about 30 percent, and more than 11,000 people work in the industry.<\/p>\n

According to official statistics, lumber production in the Republic of Karelia grew by two percent last year.<\/p>\n

The taxes paid by forest industry companies to the republic's budget increased by seven percent from 2022.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
