What has driven the price curve to rise in an exceptional way mainly in 2023 is the low timber supply rather than consumption. Now we can see change in attitude in the Swedish wood industry, which means that many who previously saw the price situation as something extreme that will correct itself, are starting to move to something more like a permanent condition.<\/span><\/p>\n

''The industry has somehow started to accept this high level. If it will then stay this high or if it will be 10-15 percent lower, we dare not say. But it is quite obvious that the industry has gone from feeling that this is no longer enough to that it is a level we have to get used to,'' says Johan Freij, Senior Expert, Forestry and Agriculture at Danske Bank.<\/p>\n

The market situation must change<\/strong><\/p>\n

In February 2024, Sweden's sawmills timber cost in relation to the price of timber was the highest in 25 years, probably even longer.<\/p>\n

''It is as unique a situation as it was a few years ago when the sawmills carved gold with butter knives,'' says Johan Freij.<\/p>\n

The situation is unsustainable in the long term for the sawmill industry and Danske Bank's forest expert believes that it is really only an external event such as a storm or strong and widespread bark beetle attacks that can cause prices to reverse.<\/p>\n

Or possibly that the forest owners generally get the feeling that the best prices are now. Then the supply could increase. The prices of timber in, for example, the Baltics have gone down, so there are some signals in our surrounding world that prices are being regulated. An industry cannot lose money for an extended period of time, that goes without saying. Sooner or later the prices of wood products have to be raised properly or the prices of timber will fall.<\/p>\n

''I don't think that timber prices will drop significantly in 2024, I dare not say more than that. The only thing that can be said for sure is that it is at least not a bad opportunity to cut down right now,'' says Johan Freij at Danske Bank.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
