As the Federal Statistical Office also reports, lower logging due to forest damage was the main cause of this decline.

6 million m3 less damaged wood

In 2023, at 38.7 million m 3 , 13.2% less damaged wood was felled than in the previous year (2022: 44.7 million m 3 ). After the record year of 2020, when 60.1 million m 3 was the largest amount of damaged wood since the time series began in 1990, the felling of damaged wood fell for the third time in a row.

In 2023, a good half (54.9%) of logging was due to forest damage, which was the lowest value since 2018. In 2020, the share of damaged wood in total logging was just under three quarters (74.8%).

Insect infestation remains the main cause of damaged wood

In 2023, 27.2 million m 3 of damaged wood were felled due to insect damage . That was 2.6% more than in the previous year (2022: 26.6 million m 3 ). However , the two record years of 2020 and 2021, which were characterized by damage caused by bark beetle infestation, each with over 40 million m 3 of insect wood, were significantly undercut. The proportion of insect-related damaged wood felling of the total damaged wood was 70.3% in 2023.

The second most common cause of damaged wood in 2023 was winds and storms, which caused 4.9 million m3 of wood felling. In the previous year this value was 12.4 million m3.

Declining spruce felling continues

Logging of the wood species group “spruce, fir, Douglas fir and other softwood” in 2023 was 46.6 million m 3, significantly below the previous year's value of 52.8 million m 3 (-11.7%). In 2020 and 2021, over 62 million m 3 of wood from this group of wood species, which primarily consists of spruce, were felled.

Despite the further decline, this group of wood species remained the most important in Germany in 2023, with a share of almost two thirds (66.0%) of total logging. In 2022 the proportion was 67.1% and in previous years it was even 74.8% (2021) and 77.3% (2020).

The spruce stands, which were often planted as a monoculture in the past, have been particularly badly damaged by the bark beetle in recent years (especially 2020 and 2021). The lower quantities of insect-damaged wood therefore also reflect the declining supply of spruce trees.

More and more energy wood

The majority of the felled wood is used as so-called trunk wood in the sawmilling and veneer industry, for example as lumber, pallet wood or parquet wood. In 2023, 39.1 million m 3 and thus 55.4% of the amount of wood produced were felled with the aim of recycling logs.

The second most important type of wood was industrial wood with 14.1 million m 3 (20.0%), closely followed by energy wood with 14.0 million m 3 (19.9%). The previous highest value for energy wood since German unification in 1990 was 13.8 million m 3 in 2022. In 2023 it rose again by 1.4%. The ten-year average from 2013 to 2022 (10.9 million m 3 energy wood) was exceeded by 28.5%.

A total of 70.6 million cubic meters (m 3 ) of wood was felled in German forests in 2023 .
