The economic outlook for Finland's forest industry will improve slightly this year<\/span>, Pellervo Taloustutkimus PTT estimates in its Finnish forest industry forecast. Sawmills are still weighed down by the downturn in construction, but the production and export of pulp, paper and cardboard is growing moderately.<\/p>\n

The recovery of construction and the general revival of the economy will begin to increase exports more clearly during the next year.<\/p>\n

\"Last year was difficult for the forest industry, and this year is going to be even more sluggish, especially at the sawmills. Frozen construction and the general weak state of the economy reduce the demand for sawn timber, both domestically and internationally. The situation is better in the chemical forest industry\", says forest economist Matti Valonen .<\/p>\n

Ten percent more for softwood<\/strong><\/p>\n

The use of wood is on the rise, especially driven by mass industry, which increases felling and raises wood prices. Next year, Finland's wood product industry will also catch up with new growth.<\/p>\n

The annual average price of softwood will increase by nearly ten percent from last year, PTT predicts. Next year, the growth rate will level off at around three percent.<\/p>\n

The annual average price of sawlog's remains almost at last year's level. The price of havutuk will increase by about one percent from last year, but the price increase of birch wood will continue to be higher. Next year, the price of sawlogs will rise by about three percent.<\/p>\n

Logging pressure at home, wood imports are recovering slowly<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to PTT, the use of pulpwood will increase by about two percent this year. Production is increasing in the mass industry, but there is still a slight decline in the wood products industry. Next year, the production of the Finnish forest industry will increase in general, which will increase the use of wood by five percent.<\/p>\n

The trend increases the need for domestic logging, as the recovery of wood imports continues to be slow. This year, the total amount of felling will increase by about four percent, which is especially visible in private forests. Next year, the amount of felling will continue to rise by around five percent.<\/p>\n

Adaptation to the end of Russian wood imports continues. Last year, wood imports grew from Sweden and the Baltics, from which almost 40 percent more wood was imported than in 2022. Imports from these countries covered more than 90 percent of the total raw wood imports.<\/p>\n

In particular, the import of pine pulpwood from Sweden is expected to grow in the future as well, led by Kemi's bioproduct factory.<\/p>\n

The final impact of this spring's political strikes on production and exports throughout the year will depend on demand for the rest of the year. If there is demand, then the forest companies can partly catch up on the production lost in the strikes by increasing the operation rates of the plants.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
